a native cross to suit saler cows or?

Shorthorn - The heaviest muscled Shorthorn you can get your hands on. Crosses well on Saler - You’ll retain the easy calving/low maintenance traits, your surplus heifers will be in great demand and you’ll get easier fleshing male offspring into the bargain. Also, I’m not in UK but isn’t there a shorthorn scheme (Morrison’s maybe?) that would be an extra bonus in your pocket if finishing?

If you're East Midlands could you find a butcher to sell DW who would give a premium for a LR sire?

Certainly no point going for a P population bull when you're crossing breeds anyway.

I've seen LR crossed with various cows (Hereford, Red Poll, Gloucester, Murray Grey) and all the calves did well off lowland grass.

Only had issues with one calving, which was twins, each with a leg forward and a leg back.

Find your market and then find a bull I would say. If you can get a contract with a local butcher then whatever they want would be best or if you can get on a premium scheme with a supermarket then that breed will be best.
If selling at market then whatever sells best at market is best. I use Angus, Fleckvieh and Polled Charolais here and only have to help a very low percentage of any of the breeds.

@Frank-the-Wool I was told they used Lincoln's to revive the breed after the war!
WB

I am not sure that is true as there were still plenty of them left after the War as they were being used as draft animals through the war and there were still plenty around.
There were two distinct types of Sussex as there were with many other breeds, there were those that had been bred small like the little Angus and Hereford and the small number that remained as poorer conformation but very hardy and milky that were related to the working cattle.

At least if they did use the Lincoln it was better than a Red Poll!!
Most of the Sussex today have a small amount of Limousin which has improved the breed in a number of ways without sacrificing any of the hardiness or easy finishing on grass only.

@Frank-the-Wool No, I meant that they used the Lincoln on the Salers! not sure if that is true but they do look similar even there heads!!
WB

The Saler is considered to be one of the oldest pure breeds in the world.
The only record of other blood was a small amount of Shorthorn and possibly a little Devon. Both of those make sense as milk production was important.
I am sure many of our British breeds are interrelated.

Hook a plough on one would be like using a fendt

@ADHDan Any pictures? Dan has done the sensible thing and bought a Lincoln Red bull with moral support from his Dad!! Winceby Yarlin is yet another good Stock bull working near Lincoln.
Hopefully we will see some pictures in the future and find out how he settled in!!

Been a while since I been on the forum, it’s not all good news though 😬.
@Wolds Beef the bull settled in nicely , kids renamed him ‘red lightning’ and he was lovely …. I say ‘was’ because last week he decided to jump a gate and didn’t make it all the way across 😑.
We’ve just started getting calves sired by him and so far so good , real shame what happened

What a shame. Some brilliant pictures, let me know how his progeny do. There were some bulls passed at the sale at Melton, have a look on the Lincoln Red website and you might get another good Lincoln Red. Or have a word with the breed secretary or NTU Brackenhurst may well have some to sell and Neil is a real Lincoln Enthusiast..

Just checked the catalogue from March 26th. Mr Needler(103 years old) has a bull that was passed. Brackenhurst had a bull that was not presented so it might be worth an enquiry and Emma Green from Suffolk had 2 bulls passed, they might be worth a look. Let me know how you get on and I will make a few enquiries if you like.
