Just trying Aberfields but arnt convinced yet and are hearing horror stories from some people. Bought 2 Rams for a trial in 2015, 1 died after 6 months so only 1 left but we kept 20 ewe lambs from each.
Had a yearling slip a lamb (2.5 weeks off lambing) small runty thing that was born dead. She also has no udder otherwise would've put a month old suffchartex on it.
She's a aberfield x Glamorgan - we have about 18-20 of them yearlings.
Because every idiot under the sun wants Aberfields does this mean she will be worth more as a cull?
She's going from here anyway. Someone else can breed from the kite. She's wild as anything, jumped the trailer twice :/Erm...with that paint job have you got a choice?
Why would you expect a hog 2.5 weeks from lambing to have an udder?......And yes 2.5 weeks from lambing it would be a "small runty thing"........what else has gone wrong with the aberfield ewes?Had a yearling slip a lamb (2.5 weeks off lambing) small runty thing that was born dead. She's 24month old, she'd lambed last year, just a shame she couldn't hold on this year. Why would you expect a hog 2.5 weeks from lambing to have an udder?......And yes 2.5 weeks from lambing it would be a "small runty thing"........what else has gone wrong with the aberfield ewes?
Aarh I see! ...I'd have thought a yearling would have been a hog!.....Let her sort herself out and get her sold cull. I've given hogs a second chance before only to be let down as a shearling.....Damned annoying! I've found the best performing hogs stay the best performing ewes all their lives, so it pays to be unforgiving on you're hogs. She's 24month old, she'd lambed last year, just a shame she couldn't hold on this year.
The udders are getting quite big on some of the ewes expecting a week after so thought she'd have something there but nothing at all really. I wasn't complaining about her aborting, annoying as it is as any ewe can do that. I was wondering if she'd fetch better money than a mule in the mart - although she'll probably go as a cull.
For as long as i remember we haven't kept any ewe lambs that haven't bred the first year so she wouldn't have been kept if there'd be a problem. This year we're expanding so we're carrying over the 19 empty commercials, 6 empty terminal/pures, 63 glamorgan ewe lambs we've bought in - too small for first year lambing.Aarh I see! ...I'd have thought a yearling would have been a hog!.....Let her sort herself out and get her sold cull. Oh, just seen she lambed as a hog.......that's just bad luck then.....Some sheep just bag up late

What are the Aberfields bred off and what are the problems with them? Are the highlanders bred from the same sheep or are they pure(er)? what's the difference in figures between the two breeds (Scanning, weaning, growth rates etc)?......It's always good to use someone else's learning curve !Our first Aberfields to lamb have not exactly shone, just a few with niggles.
Maybe we are just spoilt with how good the highlanders are.
I'm pretty pleased with my aberfield x lleyn ewes , 1 niggle...lambs from them are a bit small at birth compared to lambs from our other breeds. The Aberfield lambs from the lleyn ewes are stronger at birth, so a bit puzzled why their lambs are smaller. Some are a bit soft too. Used texel tups on themOur first Aberfields to lamb have not exactly shone, just a few with niggles.

Here's a 24month old(2nd set of twins) aberfield x welsh ewe (46) and a 12month old aberfield x welsh ewe lamb (44).
Both sired with gingemong/Texbel Rams. If I can keep their weight down we may have more but still to early to say yet!

They are not big, at this age anyway, as the strongest reared lambs as hoggs.Any idea on her weight? We're frightened that some of ours, especially if they havnt reared twins as a ewe lamb could be too heavy for rearing twins?
Just lambed these two,Aberfield X Highlander X Welsh Mule mother with a Charolais sire.
