Ablation.

Some detailed info here.

I know a lot of people are understandably anxious about anyone delving into the plumbing of the heart and I have not seen actual ablation done but I have watched a lot of coronary angiograms and angioplasty. This kind of stuff is treated as being very routine by the consultants doing the job, even though it might look a bit like trying to assemble a ship in a bottle. The man I sat and watched at work was literally performing the procedures one after the other like a formula 1 pit crew. It sometimes took longer to write up the notes and document what had been done than actually do some of the procedures.

I don't know what side effects there are from your medications. I presume if successful, the ablation would negate the need for them. You will have a needle poke hole in your upper thigh, that is it. I have seen it done.

That's a useful leaflet. Just started to learn about ablations as I had an impressive supraventricular tachycardia a couple of weeks ago (90 minutes at 200+ bpm; scary as it was my first proper one, only had 20 mins before) fortunately resolved by the Valsalva Manoeuvre. Hope all goes well Sir Loin, my sister in law had an ablation AF about 10 years ago and now has no problems.

Had it done in 2005 - had a great time flirting with the young lady nurses, although was slightly put out that the only result of my flirting was being asked out on a date by Daniel, also my nurse.

My side affects other than the constipation are really bad joint pain wrist, elbow, shoulder and neck these have materialised once taking my tablets and have worsened badly with increased rates. I go into AF with strenuous work, chasing sheep!!!!etc and if I miss taking a tablet.

Cripes, I know a lot of heart medications have some peculiar side effects but that sounds very difficult to live with.

Had it done twice around 7 years ago. My AF had become persistent and meds, shocking were not working. Done in London under sedation initially so I was watching it on the screen. That got a bit much after a while and couldn’t remember much after that. Second time I don’t remember much. For some people there is a fair chance a second procedure will be required to deal with the paths missed first time. It can take a while after the procedure for it to work but I clearly remember the day around 6 weeks after the second op when I suddenly felt really well as it came back into rhythm and have never looked back. There are no long term guarantees and only time will tell whether there are any long term issues but I am stronger than ever (at 60) and enjoy every day with a decent pulse. I tried to make sure it was done (particularly in those days) by a surgeon who was a leading specialist in that field.
