About the Garden Snails and large brown snail.

This warm damp morning my garden is covered in large brown garden snails around 25mm across. They may be Cornu aspersum. Are these introduced invasive species? My childhood memory of 50-60 years ago is of a much smaller snail around 15mm max across and much more varied in colour. What is the effect of these big boys on the smaller ones and further down the line on the song thrush. Again my childhood memory is of the thrush smashing the smaller snails on a favourite rock with a pile of broken shells around it.

We still have a lot of the smaller snails, typically with white shells with a steak of yellow, so I suppose they are living alongside the larger snails. We see piles of shells of the smaller snails on the various “anvils” that the thrushes use to break them open. Untidy farmyards and gardens are a haven for snails ….. so they do well here.

These are the common garden snail, also known as the edible snail. Very common here in the UK but possible introduced by the Romans.
It was known as Helix Aspersa until recent reclassification.
It is of Mediterranean areas so possibly if the OP lives up North then it may be more common thanks to global warming. another reason may be less predators such as Glow worms who lived on snails

I’d never thought that the thrushes can’t smash the shells of the bigger snails.
You learn something everyday. I’ll have a look round the anvils next time.

It would be helpful if the OP were to put up his location. His user name makes me wonder if he is not in the UK. His reference to an invasive species would only be relevant to a particular country.
