going to and from the door all the time to let cows in is time consuming

most abreasts i know of still have jars , if they dont have auto milk release this slows things up , a lot also dont have acr's

cows turning 90* in a narrow exit passage isnt good for cow or cowflow

Father split his 8 North facing stalls and placed 4 facing East and 4 west if you understand with a gap about 10 feet apart
Meant miller had far less walking and could keep better eye on things
Then he doubled up clusters so had a 8 stalls and 8 sets of cluster
We then ditched it for a herringbone first 5/10
Then 10/10 low line
Then 12/12
As they say variety is the spice of life :)

We've got a 10 abreast. It takes us 1 1/2 hours minimum to do 6 rows of cows plus cleaning/circulating etc which is 4-500 L/hour. I don't see how we could significantly speed the job up without extending the parlour or feeding a lot less in there but it is helping at the moment by leaving them on the yard for an hour beforehand. They are much keener at coming through and going out and the flies aren't as bad.

Currently milking up to 74 through a 6/6 abreast but was taking 3 hrs a milking at peak yieldo_O. Acrs which help you not forget a cow . 2 yrs ago we put matting throughout both levels as ours do 3 x 90 degree turns which has helped speed up flow and also reduce foot problems, nicer for the milker too. I'll dig out some pics. That said, we are changing to a s/h 12/12 herringbone soon as OH wants his life back esp as we will be running 80 this spring and when they're giving 40-50 kg it takes too long! Only real probs with flow are when one comes back the wrong way from the dispersal yard and causes a pile-up, also getting the lazy sods out of cubicle house but once they're in the collecting yard they are pretty good at coming in. They go quite nicely through a footbath 6 yards out of the parlour exit.

Before and after fitting rubber matting. Gets slippery in areas where milk is split unless regularly scrubbed but otherwise a real success. Grooved floor was getting very pitted beneath the udder area so had to fill and level first. Grooved concrete and twisting also no good for their feet.

Also fitted cluster flushes which made cows jump at first they are fine with them now.

I always wanted to put an auto wash in ours, so swing the pipe over, press a button and finished, I thought that would save the most amount of time, and stop in parlour feeding.

what things have people done to abreast parlours to speed up out put.
ACR,s a few years ago helped. More recently, clusterflushing, to do away with hand dunking in buckets. Also fitted one of Northern Dairy Equipment teat brushes, (which is great ! ) This saves about 15 mins for 60 cows in a 6*6 abreast. Previously was pre-foaming and wiping.
