Access control through rising bollard

Just thought I would share our experience of installing an hydraulic rising bollard for access control both in and out of our caravan park using ANPR. The bollard was provided by Frontier Pitts and the ANPR plus all software integration with our reservation system was provided by Alph Touch (they do mainly home automation systems but are very willing to solve any system requirements). Despite warnings that a single access/entry & exit point was likely to be problematic we are very pleased with the outcome. The only cabling to the system is a power supply all other comms from the office is by wifi. Alph Touch worked with us to develop software solutions to all the various options to deal with vehicles wanting to exit at the same time as arrivals and now the simple traffic light system regulates the flow perfectly. It is highly responsive and the system will work out if there is a car waiting so it does not drive the bollard back up only to drop it again, it just adjusts the traffic lights accordingly. Might not be the cheapest option but looks great and clients like it.

There is a separate control unit that houses the pump etc for the bollard but this shows the cameras, the bollard and the traffic lights. The small white boxes at the bottom of the traffic lights hold all the controls that integrates everything with our office about 50m away.

The other two posts on each side of the traffic lights are light beams to ensure the bollard does not come up with a car still in the "zone"

Looks a very smart job! Like how minimalistic it is.
Yes, we didn't want a barrier as we have clients strolling in and out all the time and this solution can ignore cyclists. As you say it is quite minimalist but the unit that houses the pump and bollard control is larger but could be screened off quite easily. The ANPR cameras are clever, they detect the country and sometimes the make of the car if there is a logo on the front. As we are not a high security environment we have built in some "fuzzy logic" to make sure it doesn't confuse 1s with Is or 0s with Os etc.

That's smart in a couple of ways, looks great and like you mentioned it avoids the risk of a barrier.

I've been involved in risk assessing two caravan park barriers in accordance with DHF TS11 standards (two different sites) and have highlighted the need for a seperate pedestrian entrance to guide people away from the automated swinging barriers.
There isn't room for this without giving up a pitch or a bench at the cafe and they won't do that. It's bedlam on busy days with people strolling under big traffic barriers, sometimes kids are swinging off them.
Sometime soon they'll wipe out an old dear and will be up the creek without a paddle.

Hopefully I won't be as long as I don't lose the paperwork.

Tidy job, money well spent and good to see someone doing it right (y)

The bollard including installation (we prepared the hole for the bollard and concrete base for the control box!) was £7500 and supplied by a company called Frontier Pitts. The ANPR cameras (£1300), wifi link and very clever software to integrate with the barrier and our booking system and other controls including an App on our phone so we can open and close the bollard worldwide (!!) including installation and debugging (£3100) was from a company called Alpha Touch (mainly undertake smart house controls but able to design any clever wifi controls). So all in £11,900 - not cheap but I had some grant support linked to Covid!

I have to say that I am very happy with the outcome as it works very well.

What is the contingency plan during times of power outage - Will a UPS suffice ?
To be honest from our viewpoint security is not the absolute priority as we just need a deterrent and something to manage arrivals (and over stays!) so the bollard drops when there is no power but I believe it can be set up to operate with alternative power source.
