Acid Reflex

There are two types of heartburn. High stomach acid and low stomach acid - both feel the same and are painful, and can do damage in the long term.
To know which you may have is easy, eat a teaspoon of bicarb. You can stir it in some water if you like. If you burp within a minute, you have high acid, burp within a few minutes, normal acid, or dont burp much at all, you have low acid.
Most GPs will give you an antacid if you say you have hearburn. If you have low acid, this will make it worse.
I help my low acid by having the odd teaspoon of bicarb, which seems to last around 3 days.
Good advice

I used to have reflux problems but

Made sure head end of bed an inch higher than foot end.
Wear braces and leave trouser waist loose. This helped most. Any tightness round waist caused problems.
Lay on your left side in bed more than right side.

Seem to have reached an age now where beer, wine, coffee and anything else pleasurable also has to be avoided completely.

Acid reflux is often caused by stomach ulcers. These are normally caused by heliobacter Pylori.
They are caused by drinking untreated water, normally in childhood. They are easily treated with a course of antibiotics, sadly not all doctors are aware of this.
The use of aspririn painkillers massively increase the problem

Yeah, anyone with bad reflux should visit GP and may need an endoscopy to get checked out for other issues too eg hiatus hernia. I think they can test for h Pylori now without an endoscopy.

Wasn't aware of the two different kinds of heartburn, so thanks for the knowledge Old Boar. As this thread demonstrates there are many causes of reflux and if not brought under some kind of control it can cause serious/fatal long term damage by creating the opportunity for other conditions.

Like Cubby I've lost all the back teeth on my lower jaw due to acid. Now I think about it I believe it is an indicator that dentists and doctors should be made more aware of as it starts very early on before the reflux &etc., become an issue.

Agree the losing weight can help as can braces and looser trousers, raising the head of the bed and generally using gravity to keep the acid where it's meant to be.

Didn't get much joy with acidophilus so I guess different things work for different people and its a case of seeing what works for you.

I used to suffer badly with reflux and acid indigestion. After years of suffering i went to see the doctor and luckily it was a locom and she suggested I tried cutting out gluten. I did and the problem was gone within a week. I also used to suffer chronic back pain, hip pain and sciatica and it disappeared too, I couldn't believe it.

I fall off the wagon every now and then and I suffer pretty much straight away.

Just started to suffer with this.
Cant drink tea of coffee first thing in the morning, just water.
Bread seems to be a no no as does any kind of pastry.
Cheese :cry: especially Lancs/Cheshire crumbly kinds.

I have never suffered with digestive problems before.:(

Look up Gerd and diet. Since Ive cut down on grains, sugar and general sh!t diets helped a lot. Yes I have cake but in general I keep my diet cleaner and def makes a difference tend not to eat after 6pm and watch my fluid consumption after that. Im not convinced by dairy free as I have tried it makes little difference. However look into bringing more healthy bacteria into your gut such as raw milk, homemade yogurt, sauerkraut, slow breads (avoid processed breads these are terrible for my IBS).

My husband wont take Omeprazole for the reliance and its showing that antacids are related to alzheimer's.

Mercola is a bogus organisation like so many

I disagree entirely. Think a Mercola produces some spot on stuff and as for long term use of Chlorine in the water I agree it cant be good for us. My husband wont drink our water it gets his water from the spring. He was brought up on raw water and we had it here for yrs before Welsh Water stepped in and ruined it. His teeth are excellent and health very good. I cant wait to get the spring reconnected and get off this chemical crud.

Agree about weight. That must be at least 5 kinds of acid reflux now, then - high acid, low acid, results of infection (as in ulcers), immune reaction / over-reaction, and purely mechanical - there was no room for that last doughnut.:(

I'm afraid mine was in the last category. I was only a little bit overweight, too; but I have noticed since that there is a level after which my health starts to suffer. I don't know how truly obese people cope. They must be superior physical specimens to even survive.

Oddly, my acid reflux presented as a cold that wouldn't go away; snuffling, coughing, sore throat - I was lucky my GP recognised it for what it was. Omeprazole sorts it out short-term; losing weight is the cure for me.
