Acid Reflex

I disagree entirely. Think a Mercola produces some spot on stuff and as for long term use of Chlorine in the water I agree it cant be good for us. My husband wont drink our water it gets his water from the spring. He was brought up on raw water and we had it here for yrs before Welsh Water stepped in and ruined it. His teeth are excellent and health very good. I cant wait to get the spring reconnected and get off this chemical crud.
Chlorine in water is not only very good for us but essential to our well being. Stomach acid is hydrochloric acid produced purely naturally by the body. To do it requires the ingestion of the raw ingredients

Where and how would you naturally take in the raw materials for stomach acid - and what form would they be in? Wouldn't you get them from foodstuffs, like salt? They wouldn't usually be in the form of chlorinated water, would they? Just as stomach acid out of place burns the throat, maybe chlorine going down the other way also burns the throat of susceptible individuals.

edited to say, however, considering the amount of chlorinated swimming-pool water I swallowed in my youth it it's nice to know that it couldn't do my guts any harm but might actually have helped me digest the 4d cheese roll "shivery bite" afterwards.

I've had 2 Sporadic Hemiplegic migraines the first last November which was almost identical to a stroke visual disturbance, paralysis down my left side, the second in June which creaping paralysis up my right arm and inability to speak.

The worst symptoms lifted fairly quickly but was left weakness and poor coordination in the affected limbs, and thinking was a real struggle (even more than usual) both of which gradually improved and was back to normal after 2 months.

I'm pretty sure the only thing linking both episodes was eating a packet of Walkers Sensations, Chicken and Thyme crisps, which have both potassium chloride and calcium chloride in their ingredients.

Incidently Doc has changed me from Omeprazole 20mg to Lanzoprazole 15mg, I'm trying to cut that down as well but with very limited success. I've also managed to lose nearly 3 stone over the last year and am planning to lose at least another 7lb by March which will take me under 12 Stone.

I've cut my acid reflux down to almost nil by reducing my intake of wheat based products. Stopped eating weetabix for breakfast and snacking on biscuits. Still eat a few sandwiches occasionally but I could go with out taking lanzoprazole now where I couldn't miss a pill before.

Job to know with it but I do believe that keep eating and volume in your stomach does keep acid working and therefore does'nt play up too much.
Empty stomach and seems worst.
Also drinking tea seems to kick it off?

I love cheese but gave up eating it a few years ago
seem to be ok with porridge for breakfast and bread made with oat and barley flour
pastry is a trigger for me too
crisps are now also off the menu as they all tend to have some kind of chloride in them either as part of the anti caking agent or a preservative, I suspect if you study all the labels a lot more foodstuff would as well.

Think Chlorine in tap water plays hell with it too?
I'm absolutely certain of it, Mum started to suffer really badly with it when they moved from the hill farm with it's own water supply to the village with it's mains supply.

Not wanting to ask the oblivious, but has the GP had you examined for a hiatus hernia?

Yes I was examined for hiatus hernia back in '97, yes I have one, been on various antacids ever since. I'm trying to gradually cut down on the current one, lanzoprazole, at the suggestion of the GP but it's not going to work, I can make a 15mg one last 36hrs with gaviscon on standby but no longer than that. It would be a lot simpler and probably cheaper in the long run if they could just put some kind of valve in there.

I switched to decaf tea; seemingly caffeine causes a lot of issues.
My neighbor gave me the tip. She was seeing consultants for years.

Stress too. I notice when I’m stressed, it’s also worse.

I must try altering my diet. I think as we get older, we don’t get away with the same stuff!!

Acid reflex is so much worse I find at lambing / harvest when I come in late , eat tea and go straight to bed ...
also try and keep down on level of fatty foods eaten.
Heard of some people who prop the front of there beds up which apparently helps.
I have also started taking 1 Imodium a day, which , strangely has helped the acid reflux

OMG, I feel for you all. I had no idea the problem was so common or caused so much trouble.

I get occasional attacks of the reflex but the coughing and sore throat I've always put down to smoke from my woodburner. I've done it for years and actually posted about it on here.

Now had a new baffle installed in the stove and I make sure to stack it full of wood first thing and only top up when it is almost out, so less smoke spills out. Had the chimney swept too. So less coughing and the throat is a lot better.

Three doctors told me it was the reflex and I had an ear-nose-and throat specialist pop a video camera up my nose. I have Omeprazole but don't take it as it didn't seem to do much. The stupidest thing was his remark, "It couldn't be the wood burner as we have two at home and they are no problem". Well, you're probably not allergic to smoke, are you? If someone comes into my house and lights a cigarette, I am coughing and eyes streaming within minutes!
