Adrenacaine for disbudding

Just interested to see how much everyone else uses for disbudding. We use 2.5 ml per side on the Calves. Our neighbour uses 4 per side but thinks he might cut back this year because of the shortage.

Shortage! :eek::(

Always used 2ml per side here for calves and 4ml for dehorning adult cattle.

Try rubbing 1ml into your finger tips, it's very effective! :sneaky:

Local vets are keeping what they have for themselves for ceasers, and the farm shop down the road is sold out with no more on order yet.

used to use 2ml but increased it to 4ml this year. seems to have a better success rate, its only a few pence more. this might be down to poor technique though

had to use a different product last week for our last 7 calves as our vets have run short of adrenacaine
and our keeping what they have for c sections.

they gave us lidocaine instead, which worked ok, but not as good, and i think its more expensive.

Enquired this week and was ‘allowed ‘ to buy a couple of bottles for suckled calves as few alternatives. Dairy boys might struggle which makes me think that ‘suckling calves’ is the key phrase [emoji6]

Following news of the recent shortage of local anaesthetic procaine hydrochloride products (Willcain, Dechra Pharmaceuticals and Adrenacaine, Norbrook Laboratories Limited), vets are being encourage to use techniques requiring the smallest volumes of the drug whilst stocks are scare...

The product is expected to be out of stock for the medium term, ie weeks to months.

None about in this area hardly at all. Won’t be any available for three months at the earliest apparently.

Does anyone know the true reason it was recalled?

Just seen this, I've never used paste but would do anything to avoid the dehorning if possible, I can do it clean as a whilst but hate the job! What paste do you use, any good tips etc would be appreciated?

https://apfarmsupplies.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/APS-Catalogue-2018.pdf Search for paste. Page 76 I think.

When you’re tagging the calf at day or two old:
Trim the hair with a beard trimmer - space the size of a large stamp.
Put a pea sized spot of paste on. Wear gloves for this part.
Stick a 2” square of duct tape on top.
Let the calf go.

Be prepared to have a few not 100% the first year, but you will learn (take notes) and be grand in the second year.
