With harvest creeping up on us I thought I ask to see if anyone has the same problem as me with oats and the dust from them.

If I'm come into contact with the grains or their dust, I break out in a rash that makes me go out of my mind with itching. (More than just an annoying scratch - think along the lines of your body covered in horsefly bites or nettle stings) If I don't shower and change my clothes within about an hour of exposure, the next day I'll have flu-like aches, congestion, poor concentration and be generally lethargic.

I've been prescribed some hefty anti-histamines that stop the itch, rash and hangover but only if I remember to take one before exposure - nothing can help after, I just have to ride out the symptoms.

Barley and other agricultural dusts that can cause other people problems don't seem to affect me other than the general dirty itchy nastiness that goes with the job.

Anyone else have this trouble with oats or certain grains?

It may be worth posting in the cropping section as well as not everyone looks at this section.

It looks like you are not alone and that it is a fairly common reaction:eek: can you take the antihistimines on a daily basis or do you need more than one per day. My two girls suffer from allergies to pollen etc and are on Telfast 120 and 180 to help control the symptoms but they can only take the branded tablets and not the 'same as' ones.

Thanks for those articles. The antihistamines I've been prescribed are Fexofenadine Hydrochloride. It is perfectly safe for me to take them daily, but I don't because it's unnecessary I'm not working with the grain..

If you have that problem with Oats take a tip from me and make sure you NEVER go near or have anything to do with Naked Oats.

I've never worked with naked oats, but I always assumed they would be better to work with as they have less husk.

I take it I'm wrong in that assumption....

Very very wrong ........ it’s all the little hairs not covered by by the husk.

I suffer the same rash with both oats and barley, also prescribed Fexofenadine/Telfast 120 tablets, soon know about it if I forget to take one and go near either of those two crops during harvest! Cetraben cream works well at relieving the itching if you do forget the pills
