Advice on buying a new dog

We'll be looking for a collie pup after lambing is out of the way. The bloke we got the last one from isn't breeding any more so we're starting from scratch after a long time out of the loop.
I'd want to see both parents & get to know the breeder first, so really I suppose I'm looking for a breeder at the moment rather than looking for a pup yet. There are kids around so it's important to get something with a nice nature as well as working ability.
Where's the best place to look for adverts? Roughly what's the going rate now? Any advice welcome . Ta, Lardy.
