Advice - selling ewes with lambs at foot

Hi all

I will have approx 60-70 full mouthed suffolk X Mules with texel lambs at foot, mainly twins, few singles.... And also 60-70 NCM 6T ewes with mainly twins few singles at foot to sell.

They are lambing at the moment and the query I have is how best to group them up in the fields, will try and sell them ex farm if possible.

Is saying "there are 60 sheep and 100 lambs out there at £xx per life" ok? Or should they split into singles and twins etc?

Thank you in advance for any advice.

Other question is selling them at market. My local market has a sale on 15th April of "grazing ewes with lambs at foot".... I assume it's a lot of work to pen them all up in market, transport them etc keeping them all seperate etc.... How does that work?

As they lamb I sort through too find the old girls that want selling. They all go on one field together as the lambs don’t get marked.

Now for the tricky bit. When they are old enough 2 of us go and walk out a few families at a time into bunches. Let them settle again overnight then I load up and onto market with them.

But I only sell old mules with twins on so that makes it a lot easier!

When we used too buy EWLAF I always preferred all twins or all singles. Was never keen on mixed bunches. I never knew wether one was a single because it’s a pillock and won’t rear lambs properly?

But that’s just me. 😉

Talk to your local auctioneer He should be happy to help if you are not sure how to sort them etc
He may even be able to find you buyer so you don`t have the hassle of taking them to the mart

Thank you everyone. I thought of using sell my livestock but always tricky to know how to price. You can compare what's on there of course but you don't know what's selling and how much they are actually selling for.

Have you put rings on tails and on male lambs?
Already been said ewes with lambs are selling well
If you sell at home or auction always give some luck money

Oh god, heads down lads... someone has mentioned Luck money. The “modern” farmers will be here soon too point out the error of our ways!!

Ringing lambs is a must if have thought. (Make definitely sure you get both balls too!) nothing worse than buying a ruck of rig lambs you don’t know about!

Luck money should only be given as a token of thanks. £5 to £10 per beast or £5 to £10 for a pen of 50 to 100 lambs???

It is certainly appreciated by all buyers, and I know for a fact that some buyers are reluctant to attend marts that are stingy with luck money - not for financial reasons, but because they regard the vendors as miserable ill-mannered sods who don't deserve their support.

And anyone who disagrees comes into that category.

That’s every market in Scotland I buy in then.... excluding last year because they weren’t there. The year before I bought 1950 lambs in Stirling and further up. Total luck money recieved? £10. From one man on a pen of 150 in Stirling.
