Advice towards a system in the future

Similar problems with some of the drains here. They used only straw backfill over some where the drain was down in the sand under a metre of clay. The clay has completely sealed over. Subsoiling / moling works to some extent but by the time you are deep enough to get through the clay you are in danger if hitting the drain. It's never really dry enough at depth anyway to crack it.

Only way for us is either a new scheme or dig up and re lay with stone backfill. It's just about doable with a mini digger, perhaps do worst bit each year.

Economically it doesn't really add up but nor does leaving it water logged.

Yes, 80 ha of this will take a while

Sensible will.
Not quite ready to give up yet. With my tine drill and glyphosate my 60 ha cereal is two days work and we have that for a couple of years yet. Actually, there are some articles going around about the cost of loosing glyphosate (saying about €150/ha) and maybe a selective reduction. I haven’t read this but am guessing maybe they mean stop the permission for decication?
36 of the 69 formulations currently sold in france are being withdrawn by the end of 2020 the use of the stock is still possible after that until an as yet unspeciied date basically it is going to get more expensive so buy now enough until your retirement, best investment you will make there are no authorisations for dessication with glyphosate in france only specific derogations, Buy now it will only go up in value better investment than land!!!

Not if you find you can't use it

As a complete aside and another surprise here, the "wetter" this autumn cost the same per ha, or actually a bit more, than the glyphosate !

You can continue to use it indefinately No fin d utilisation
For adjuvant use solution 39N, ammonium sulphate for penetrant or " sulfate d magnesium" for spreader wetter, who is giving you advice, the same bloke selling the product?

But as we know, the rules can change.

They don't advise using a wetter. I can't get my head around that so insist they sell me some.

Interesting what you say. I only use 120 lts per year. Couple of tonnes and I'm done for life (y)

The remaining brands of glyphosate could have a retirement date put on them but it is very difficult to retrospectively change withdrawal conditions,

Well, a big part is volenteers. Oats as a break crop at the moment after triticale.
Grasses are AMG, various rye grasses from hay and previous hay crops and various bromes.
Of course some BLW but they can always be dealt with contact later in cereals

Have you seen the chaff grinding devices the Australians have invented to destroy glyphosate ryegrass seeds as they come out of the back of the combine. Seem to work well. Would also take care of volunteers.

I know this probably isn't what you were looking for, but is it going to be vastly more expensive to plough it?

You said light land, and you are currently doing 2 x carrier passes and glyphosate.

I can't think that plough + press, then drill, will be much more expensive. Probably no need to subsoil (which you are also doing with a shakerator?) and might help with your soil drainage problems.

If you are struggling for time, just make phone call to a contractor.

Just my thoughts.

And if glyphosate gets withdrawn, then there could be some expensive direct drills sat doing nothing in the back of sheds! That said, I'm really interested in DD, but don't think I'd risk spending £100k on one with glyphosate at risk.
