Just had a thought. The compressor was about buggered so I ordered a recon kit. It was actually only £20 more for a recon unit, so I bought that.
Therefore, it wouldn't have mattered if Matt had marked it all I suppose.
Bear with me ..............
If the engine is marked (flywheel) and the pump position is marked (or using the copper wire for rotary pump, spill timing for in-line pump), don't stress about the position of the compressor.
If you are still stuck and nothing else works out for you, the technique mentioned in the previous post will work. Not a very elegant solution, but it will work.
Pete if you would like to ask Steve Mayle for advice try posting a request on you tube. He will invariably reply to people posting a question and (despite the garage/industrial language as he puts it) comes over as a very courteous person. I thought he trades as Steve Mayle Commercials, Mansfield but I could not find anything number wise.
Thanks @essexpete , but with @Mursal and other advice I think we are there. Matt has the job all timed, just got to finish building up now.
We had a right messing around day yesterday. Worst thing was we got the gearbox on one whole wrong. Didn't realise until nearly all fitted. Just about everything I touched went wrong or took hours. We are getting there now, hopefully fire her up later.
I think this wet weather is the worst problem. I'm not in a good frame of mind because I ought to be spreading not playing with the old lorry, but nobody wants me to go on wet land.
Nearly there though. Just got the starter motor, compressor to plumb in and bleed the fuel then we'll crank her over before we fit the rad finish the electrics.
Why does everything take three times longer than I expect?
I've had to leave it for now, too busy with work and Matt has other deadline jobs booked in.
Both heads were skimmed and tested all fine, all new liners in the block. The chaps who did that reckon to have done at least 100 505s over the years and never known a problem yet with a block. They didn't machine it but say the gasket seals against the liner (a fire ring??) so block face isn't an issue. We will get the rear head off as soon as we get an hour or two. Machine man is going to come and have a look then.
