Given the current hoo hah about online data and what people do with it and how they sell it to others for vast amounts, isn't it time that all the people who come on here wanting us to fill in their questionnaires about matters agricultural start paying for this valuable resource? Or is this something else that farmers happily give away for free?

Incidentally, to be legalistic about it, do these online questionnaires comply with the new data protection laws? I'm being assailed by just about every company I deal with at the mo wanting me to sign some consent form for them to hold my data, surely the same applies to these sort of things too?

All the undergraduate and postgraduate questionnaires I've filled in via TFF have been anonymous, never asking my name or exact address.

My only grumble has been where I've offered further help & been promised a summary of the findigsd in return I've never had anything.

Sounds like hard work making your own answers up, easier to draw up a survey and let farmers make them up for you.

As someone who will be looking for participants for studies in the future, and who has had a great response from farmers on here in the past, I do hope the facebook data mining stuff doesn't put anyone off. University based questionnaires are usually anonymous (and if not need to explain why not), and should always include a brief information sheet at the start, then a consent form (which will tell you how your data will be stored - and yes this should be in compliance with data protection) and a debrief at the end explaining the point of the study.

In terms of funds, sadly Universities just don't have the funds to offer participants payment for large studies where you want to gather a lot of data (within my department alone we have upwards of 40 psychologists conducting research at any one time, with each study aiming for 100 - 200 participants - the costs would mean no-one could conduct research). The pay off is usually the expectation that online surveys and the like should be 30mins or less in duration, so you are not asking for too much time.

I, and every researcher who ever asks for your help, are very appreciative of anyone who takes the time to help us out. I hope that at least some of the research you take part in is interesting, and I am certainly happy to share the published results if anyone wants to read further and hasn't been able to access the links to the papers I share on here.

Under the new GDPR you have to "opt in".........I would think that by taking the time to go in and complete the survey that would count as "opting in"

I understand your point of view and frustration, I am doing this survey as part of my dissertation at Harper Adams University and would not have shared it if was not desperate for results.

Difficult to post here or circulate openly when the academic institution owns the published thesis/dissertation.

Would be simple for ones that don't get published though (like mine).

In other news, I'd quite like a thread/section on here for us to share interesting/relevant research papers. There are lots about, and they are not all Nuffields.
