AHDB - Levy

Anyone else received their levy invoice for a ridiculous amount when they do nothing for us farmers but take our hard earned money?! We need to band together and put a stop to these parasites.

We should all get together and use the European courts to challenge the legality of forcing us all to pay such a levy.
Wait a minute, farmers work together, European courts, better just pay up.

I just filled in the online consultation, I have been charged a lot of money over the years, milk and beef, and have had some dubious advice leaflets in return. I object. If they produced some of value to me I would be happy to pay for it, but must be my choice. I disagree with paying for advertising, the retailer should pay, Bosch don’t pay for advertising the wiper blades on a new Fiesta??

Where’s the advertising at? Surely this is most important? I have never seen anything in the way of adverts for beef or lamb for ages
Quite.

Don't get me wrong, there is an absolute crap-tonnage of information on their website (especially about related NZ industry) but there is easily 100x more advertisement and self promotion on the forum here, than I've ever seen from the AHDB, not that I'm local enough to see it all.
Good online tools and stuff probably never will justify their levy, as I get the impression a fair few on here would have to be paid to use it!

But as Frank had said, make sure you all give them your feedback, as I doubt you'll get rid of them, noses in troughs et al

Pleased to see some of you agree just been given 7days to pay my levy of 21,000 which takes my contribution to 300,000 pounds I do not need these people to tell me how to grow vegetables not after 50 years and most their data is taken from seed and chemical companies anyway

Out of interest, how are the NZ bodies like Beef and Sheep NZ, etc funded? Are they from slaughter levies, or government funded (not wishing to start off another rumpus about indirect subsidies, etc:rolleyes:)?

The argument about lack of advertising is generally that farmers are not the target audience so we wouldn’t see it - similar to the ’Countryfile’ debate. How many of us watch prime time or day time tv? Or read ‘good house keeping’ magazines? No idea if this is spin or correct but it would be nice to see some impact analysis of what they do do.

My biggest gripe about AHDB is that if you read the annual reports the retailers consistently are the biggest beneficiaries of their work particularly on carcass utilisation.

Pete am I right in thinking you guys get a chance every 7yrs (??) to vote on the direction that B&L nz is heading in?
Yes, but not just suppliers get to vote, kinda related to @Bill the Bass' comment above BLNZ is jointly funded by the whole of the domestic red meat chain, so I believe the retail sector is also able to cast a vote.
Not 100% sure if I'm correct but I am just a noob on the sheep + beef scene, and I'm still exploring.
The MIA (meat industry assoc.) is also included in this
