I’ve been offered a very tidy ex hgv 44ft artic flat bed trailer with 5th wheel dolly. The problem is it’s running air suspension and air brakes. Local mechanic said he can convert the brakes to oil easily enough but it’s not worth swapping air bags to springs due to the cost. Looking at it if there’s no air in the air bags then the chassis sits on the axle stops so wondering to just leave them deflated? There’s plenty of clearance on the tyres so they won’t rub. Is anybody else doing this?

you can pump air suspension up and drive it doesn't need to have a constant feed of air

I’m maybe wrong but don’t think it’s legal to tow artic trailers and dollys behind telehandlers on the road.
you could perhaps change the brakes to oil, leave the bags and charge the air tank(s) for the suspension.
running it on the stops isn’t an option in my opinion, it’d maybe run short term but wouldn’t last, you’ll be losing mudguards, rubbing chassis and the rear cow catcher will be very low.

A small 12 volt compressor from your local car parts supplier will inflate them enough to get you running. Might need topping up between loads but a simple toggle switch will be easy to rig up. The ride height adjuster will be your main pita
There’s no road work and it’s only towing from our main straw stack back to the yard 1/2 mile on concrete track. It just means one man can fetch 20 bales back on his own without a 2nd man and tractor going as well. It’s all flat as well, so no slopes.

You could buy a 24foot drag trailer something like an old scammel for under £500. Would be cheaper than trying to put air on a telehandler
This will be enough to keep the air suspension up

1/2 mile of flat on private track? Get a decent grab on the handler and run them four at a time on the front. Did that years ago with a MF50, so surely modern ones would find it a doddle.

I'm near sure I have seen telehandlers on the continent with couplings for air brakes? My main concern would be pulling the thing after that, will be a crawl.
Not so if you have torque lock on the transmission.

How does it work if the trailer has air brakes and the machine doesn’t thought lorries needed air to keep the brakes off

If you fit the dual air and hydraulic actuators it becomes a single line type air brake system which conveniently when the air tanks are empty the brakes come off!! They will still be fail safe in the event of a breakaway from towing vehicle as the red line will be torn off but once all the air leaks from the tank over a bit of time the brakes will come off!! It’s why you can park a low loader in the yard, pull the air line and brakes are on and come back next morning to find it somewhere else!!! It’s not the best of systems and not a lot are aware of the shortfalls

So if you bought an ag trailer with air brakes it could be moved by a tractor with no air facilities
Yes you could move it if the air tank was empty or if it has a shunt valve on you can press this to release the brakes while there is still air in the tank
