Alcohol minimum unit pricing

No. The minimum price rule is cited as the reason they don’t discount litre bottles of Gin in Wales, when the sand companies do, with the same product, in England. It’s not a ‘cheap’ product, just strong.

I can’t stand the stuff personally, but a neighbour keeps a stash here as he admits he likes ‘generous’ measures when he calls in.
I don’t know he gets in his car sometimes.😂
I meant cheap per unit.

Most folk within shout of the border buy alcohol in NI anyways its cheaper than ROI already due to duty etc.
The charge will probably bring folk from a bit further afield to fill their boot every so often tho!

Not my favourite but I do enjoy one.

Not mine either. Mrs HM likes the HP Dark Origin but I prefer MacAllan Fine Oak. Neither of which will be affected by minimum pricing, which is really designed to curtail the Buckfast and cheap cider generation, and is a policy I actually am quite happy with.

And it doesn`t work or address the problem, it is gesture politics at its best.
They compared the 12 months after implementation with the previous 12 months - and found it led to an average price increase of 5p per unit.
The reduction in pure alcohol sold was the equivalent of 26 units annually per person - about 12 pints of average strength beer. (1 a month if you like!)
Despite the reduction in alcohol sold, the sales still equated to every adult in Scotland drinking about 27 bottles of vodka a year!!
If I remember correctly the total alcohol sold in Scotland equates to every resident man, woman and children equated to 24 units per week. Shocking when you think about it and perhaps goes someway to explain the violence and poor health outcomes that affect to many up here.

To that end the minimum pricing works particularly in newer drinkers as it costs more, and as the shop keepers are making more profit from sales, they perhaps pay more attention to being within the law.

There is of course a risk that if the unit price is set to high some may move to other stimulants with equally poor outcomes for individuals and communities.

I don't know how the state should tackle alcohol as an issue. It can be debilitating for many people.

I would ban gambling outright mind. All of it.

There’s a thread elsewhere about totalitarian control iirc...

I don’t gamble (other than farming) or smoke, but I would be totally against the idea of outlawing either. Plenty of folk enjoy the buzz of an odd flutter, without any habitual addiction.

During the pandemic I saw people buying crates off beer in local shops probably due to lockdown and some people being layer off work with no to do other than drink sadly.
