Popped another 5 steers on yesterday with some b/w bulls. Finally got login details for Morrison’s website. Happy enough with them, was surprised with the info at the top though regarding three month averages for weight gain into the plant. I know I have pushed them but mine have done better than their bull average! Considering how tight their bull spec is I thought it would be higher than that

I was watching the programme about the water buffalo breeder in the north of the UK . The last programme I saw was when he was feeding some veggies to try and get their weight up. Don't know how it all went for him. But this last episode saw the buffalo being let out in the field and then down to a water hole . The buffalo's had such an expression of content on their faces . They wallowed and turned over in the water , and I learnt quite a bit from what the farmer was saying . These programmes are great to watch, and I think we should see a lot more of them showing different farming methods, it would enlighten the viewing public as to what goes on on the real farms, and I am sure there would be no complaints from the farmers union and elf an safety.

That’s some brilliant weights for their ages.
If you don’t mind me asking. What is your feeding plan with those cattle? An do you buy them all as calves?

Thanks. Just feeding them ad lib right through like bulls, no silage. They came in as reared calves but I am rearing further batches myself. 16% crude protein until around 350 kilos then onto 14% finisher. That was the second draw some did better than that. Done as an experiment with steers as too many dairy blue bulls just won’t get the finish on them and the penalties get harder all the time for 2’s. Plus the better base price to start with. I’ve been very pleasantly surprised by how they fed. I have tried a batch on ad-lib plus bale silage but haven taken them off it what a waste of time, literally.I worked out it would knock £50 off the total feed cost but it had cost me more than that in reduced dlwg by the time they were 350 kilos. I’ve decided silage is just for cows!

Did you have the reared calves from woodheads?
