What did these make?
Just got my grades. They are crap. Weights look light too, but haven’t got lost to check. Was expecting at least a couple of o+

Thanks. Just feeding them ad lib right through like bulls, no silage. They came in as reared calves but I am rearing further batches myself. 16% crude protein until around 350 kilos then onto 14% finisher. That was the second draw some did better than that. Done as an experiment with steers as too many dairy blue bulls just won’t get the finish on them and the penalties get harder all the time for 2’s. Plus the better base price to start with. I’ve been very pleasantly surprised by how they fed. I have tried a batch on ad-lib plus bale silage but haven taken them off it what a waste of time, literally.I worked out it would knock £50 off the total feed cost but it had cost me more than that in reduced dlwg by the time they were 350 kilos. I’ve decided silage is just for cows!
Very interesting. We buy store cattle at the minute to fatten but I do like the idea of not buying someone else’s problems all the time. Can I ask what your ration is made up of? The only thing that puts me off is the calf rearing. You need a lot more skilled labour than I have access to.

The calf rearing isn’t too bad I bought some group hutches and rear them in fives on a wydale feeder. Wean them and take out the dividing gates, all you need is a bit of spare concrete

Big one came to just over £1500, so quite pleased. Did he behave himself in the ring? We never made it back down to see them sold
Were you unloading yours at the same time as ours?
dont think so we unloaded on the steel docks in the middle ,was about 11.40 when we got there and had to run him up the race to check his ear tags 14months and 2 days old 722kg come to £1300 happy enough

Must have been another Charolais that unloaded next to us then. Yours had grown well, ours were a fair bit older than that. What was trade like on the whole?

Watched some stores sold until they rung the bell for the bulls ,The store trade was good, certainly better than a couple of weeks ago and the trade for the young bulls looked better with more buyers competing. The heifers i sold at Leek on Saturday would have perhaps been better sold yesterday but a 7month old bull sold very well so probably levelled it up,Fodder still sold to a good trade at leek a small load wheat straw (6 string) @ £99.50 ton and a large load 6 string @ £87 per ton and hay still looking to dear to feed anything
