All things Dairy

Few more feeds of 1st round left, nailing it down in this fine weather. 2nd round has some heavy but very lush covers.

Entitled My Favourite Field

It's the only ploughable field on the farm that hasn't been reseeded within my memory, and I'm 39. And each year, I keep finding reasons not to touch it. The way it looks today confirms that (excuse the docks). It's better than other fields down less than a quarter the time. Would love to know what the varieties were. It would have been sown as long term grazing back in the day, and it does look quite diploidy. Grows to no height, but immensely thick. It's silage nowadays, and yields every bit as well as our cutting stands.

Should a "great in grass" be able to identify the varieties? Before it goes to seed?

How do you reseed the rest?.direct drill?

Do they have to be moved or just bedded a lot if you get heavy rain for a few days? I've mine on concrete, and they take a good bit of bedding those days.

There's a quadrant of rape straw in each hutch just laid out in slabs. That keeps it draining so it just needs a top up of straw of shavings in the wet. I hope we can get the first 120 out by the end of the week.

How do you prevent slurry pipe joiner from making a mess being pulled across the arable feild, i wanted to do some oats but contrsctor not very keen!

If using storz couplings they don’t make a mess, also you’ll need a hose humper to pull the pipe.
