Maize has sort of died a death in Northern Ireland, but we grew it for about eight years in a row under plastic, and usually got in by 20's of April. Needed every day we could give it to get it ripened.

I was under the impression that it was total heat until that mattered when it came to maize not drilling date. But then I’ve never grown any so I wouldn’t know

Won’t take long to mow 110 acres with these 2!

View attachment 798346 How would you work grass into maize? Sod seems to be a arse? Been sprayed off then cut ,ploughed , rolled with boards and now powerharrowed? Is this good enough
Planted into a lot worse here. Maize is a big seed as long as you can bury it so it has moisture, roll it so in contact with soil and does not have too much compaction we find it is usually ok

Same here grew it from 93 till 98,we can grow grass, half a crop of maize isn't worth the hassle.
Tried maize for 3 years here in the north east. Got 1 cracking crop & 2 OK ones but at considerable cost
We can be sure of getting a big crop of wheat (to whole crop ) every year at half the cost & find it feeds just as wll as maize when fed with high quality grass silage.

Darn young ens, never had it so good. Paternity leave indeed. When my first was born I was sheeting the pit an hour after the arrival

When my son was rushed to A&E with meningitis aged six, I only found out when neighbour came to tell me (no mobiles then) but I wanted to finished drilling - had about 12ac to do - but fortunately neighbour insisted that I go. Just as well really as it was touch and go fir a few days.
Biggest bollocking I have ever got from the missus ... yet
