It's not feeling very autumnal here right now. The grass is all wilting again after lunch, I think it's only the heavy dews that are keeping it green.

PDd all the cows this morning. 10% empty, not brilliant but I shortened the block from a drifting 15/16 weeks this year back to 11 weeks so if you ignore the ineligible cows then empty rate would have been near 5% with zero intervention.
Weather can stay like this till the end of October then it can take up [emoji23]

Breed records smashed in Wales!
Kivells Dairy team travelled to West Wales to conduct the On-Farm dispersal of the Glanmor Herd of 260 Pedigree Jerseys & Guernseys on behalf of Dafydd, Helen & Tanwen Cox.
The sale attracted a huge crowd from all over the UK and Ireland and saw a phenomenal trade from start to finish
with 18 over £2000!
A new breed record was set for a Guernsey at 4000gns and with the exception of one small dispersal of 17 Jerseys in the past this is the highest sale average achieved for a herd of this size with 125 cows levelling at £1503! The sale topped at 5500gns for the much admired “Glanmor Bruce Disney VG88” a stunning heifer by Vermular Bruce, this heifer who is due in November to Matt sold into a Shropshire herd.
At 3400gns was “Glanmor Warrior Feather EX92” a third calver by Glanmor Rocket Whiskeys Warrior backed by three excellent dams, she sold to the Davis Family, Devon for their Rivermead herd. A super second calver “Glanmor Vanahlem Almond VG88” by Panoo Abe Vanahlem, sold due
in January to Casino to an undisclosed buyer in Scotland. Close behind at 2600gns was the “Glanmor Impression Volvic VG87” by Rock Ella Impression, this heifer was Champion heifer in milk at the Royal Welsh this year and sold due in February to Casino. At 2400gns was “Glanmor Jebb
Elisha VG87” by Irishtowns B127 Iatola Jebb, this heifer went back to Huronia Imperial Elsie EX92 and sold due in February to Craze to Mark Logan of Northern Ireland. Also going to Northern Ireland was “Glanmor Colton Icecream VG86” by Chilli Action Colton, she sold backed with 3 excellent
dams at 2250gns to Jack King. Her May born heifer calf by Wilsonview If Matt sold well at 680gns. Richard Saxby has housed a few of his well-bred “Saxown” bred animals at Parcgwyn and he sold an outstanding heifer “Saxown Barcelona Cash 97” by FDL Barcelona at 2200gns to Mr R Fletcher of Cardigan. One of the stars in the herd was “Glanmor Cavalia Hawaii EX92” by Lencrest Cavalia, she sold fresh a month at 2200gns to volume buyer Messrs Edgar & Son of Kent who purchased 45 head to establish a new herd. In Calf Heifers topped at 1250gns for “Glanmor Barcelona
Firestick” by FDL Barcelona, this heifer sold five months In Calf to Mike & Lynn Robertson of Bristol.
Heifers just recently served sold very well between 900-1050gns and the empty heifers also met strong demand topping at 2000gns for a cracking heifer “Glanmor Dazzler Fiji” by Sunset Canyon Dazzler, this heifer was daughter of the 3400gns Feather and after some spirited bidding she sold to Jack King. The daughter of the top priced animal “Glanmor Mclung Deer” a November born calf by homebred bull Glanmor Warrior Clan Mclung sold well at 1500gns to James Warren & Family of Penzance. An October born heifer “Glanmor Casino Spooky” backed by 4 generations of excellent dams sold well at 1350gns to Richard
Saxby. Heifer calves sold after their dams sold to an electric trade topping at 850gns for a May born calf “Glanmor Matt Rollercoaster” which was out of a show cow “Glanmor Wizard Rest EX92”. Others sold to 720gns, 700gns twice and 680gns twice. A small herd of Guernseys had been
established over the last few years and Glanmor had been home to the breeds first two EX96 cows of which one was in the sale.
The Guernseys saw a new breed record of 4000gns which was given for “Glanmor Legend Okapi VG89” a beautiful second calver by Coulee Crest Grumpy Legend,
she sold to Duncan Dawes Farms LTD of Banbury along with her maternal sister “Glanmor Python Okapi H86” by Lindrian Python at 3200gns and their dam “Glanmor Hercules Okapi EX96” at 2400gns. Brymor Westward 50 EX92” a third calver by Dairyman Mint Phonze sold well at 1800gns

This has to be one of the greatest
sales to have taken place for both the Jersey & Guernsey breeds in a very long time which has produced the following outstanding averages:
125 In Milk Cows & Heifers (all in) £1503
45 In Calf & Served Heifers £990
42 Yearling Heifers £696
31 Heifer Calves £527

And least you have grass. Full winter feeding about to start here.
you can't be to far away from us, wincanton, and we have had b all rain all summer, will have to reseed a lot this autumn, some leys have just died, no grass cut here since mid may ! the bit that gets me, is friends saying how much fodder they have ! We are now spring calving, but have been feeding for 6 weeks, and as we have about 25 autumn calvers left, we are going to bring them in +some spr cows giving 25litres plus and put on a full winter ration ! definitely not planned for ! The only good thing, is fodder should be cheap this winter ! We put 25 acres of rape in after whole crop, and that caught enough rain to get going, it's 8 inches high now, but grass growth is still slow, we have put a bit of fert on, but ......

Not a bad summer here by any means, but could be better. Lots of wet weather around, having a negative impact on costs, utilisation, and forage qualities. On the plus side, enough forage production to partly offset the negatives. I'd like it drier, or rather, more time in between the rain, rather than having it every day. The four wettest months YTD March, august, June and July, in that order. Having reasonable ground we got away with it. The contractor went to mow a friend not too far away on Saturday and had to pull out and go home.

Clamp is full. I have a lot of round bales. I made September silage last year, rubbish. With Barley as cheap as it is at the moment September silage is the most expensive feed you can give cows. It will go back into the soil as nutrients for next year.
If you get it dry though would it not be better to bale and sell them if the situation is tight not too far away ?
