But the cultures have all shown there to be no TB present so far. Does that not mean it's not there?
They normally take the sample for culture from a lesion. So if they can't find a lesion they are not necessarily taking it from where there are TB bacteria. It doesn't mean the animals have not been exposed to TB which is what the skin test is measuring.

But if nothing visible to take a sample from which tissue are they taking to sample ? they will only culture what can be seen surely. that was the impression I got when I watched my 3 swing through the slaughterhouse, 1 had lesions and 2 did not so only cultures were taken from the visible lesions. this was a few years ago to be fair.

If they cant find anything they drain the lymphocyte (I think - cant remember what it is called) as this is where fluid from the lung drains and test the sample for tb. This is what i was told on thursday by our vet who did the tb advisory thing for us, she's on the board so should know what she's talking about (hopefully).

And to add... 'no visible lesions' is exactly that. A quick look in the obvious places with the human eye, the same as everything else going along the slaughter line. Not a microscopic detailed examination.
Or tissues cut to thin ham size slices to check in ultra detail for tb as in many cases legions will be there but not found.

I'm a little out of the loop and would hope to stay that way

I have unfortunately been pulled head first through the loop at what seems like the speed of light ? 9 cows gone after 8 years free, closed herd with all new genetics via ai, it was a matter of time in our area though. Not that that makes it any easier

Where is “our area” just in case I need to panic?

fresh sheets and Sunday lunch for some of the R2’s ready for a busy week of getting in calf next week.

the wait is a bit long for one young man. The one in the middle has become considerably more “bully” over the last 2 weeks.
