there’s a happy medium plenty sit in the boozer boasting they never pay tax, if you never pay any tax you never get any real money out of your business.
Yes I would agree totally, I was just trying to make the point that on paper things can look very different to what they do on the ground. Views on farm upkeep might also depend on business structure whether partnership, sole trader or ltd company, cash needs off farm and also stage of life and whether there was any succession

as jerseys are chocolate poodles
the white maggotty lice, used to lamb 6/700 of the things, sold when we started milking again, and can honestly say we haven't regretted selling them, bad enough on tack, but do a seriously good job.
Tidy farms, public perception, buyers etc, there is a real problem arising here, standards are rising all the time, just as farmyards get older, our neighbour was on a 'compulsory kite visit,' and was told any dairy buildings, over 10 yrs old, are outdated, and should be replaced, that kite man is advising buyers. I have heard of some farms, losing their contracts, not for quality, but for appearance. No doubt they were scruffy, but, for tenants especially, it is concerning, do they invest, or landlords, or neither, and if they do, tenant still carries the can. As we all know, once this route is taken, standards get a little tighter each year, and the returns make major investment, a serious choice.

An efficient farm can and in my opinion should look a bit threadbare. Tidy, current, but nothing flash but the crops, cows and basic infrastructure

Congratulations 👏

Bet your glad you got it off when you did, a good crop vetches can soon pull a crop to the floor
we used to grow oats and vetches years ago, size of crop related to weather, good weather/heavy rain = pancake, and that is why we stopped, early 70's, maize replaced it.
But, l will admit to being worried, small patches had started to go down, as the only old fogey around here, with 'experience', was told 'not to fuss'. H/rye is more upright, than oats though.
The maize, sown after cutting, june 4th, is 12ins high, looks to be growing 2ins a day

october 19th, after the maize.
Timing, is quite critical, although rye is a 'cold clime' crop, it is ideally sown in sept, to let it get established before winter. Likewise, maize needs to be in early, to cut early, so a juggling act, cut the rye/vetch before optimum time, to get the maize in, june 4th, to cut the maize early enough, to get the rye in. Our maize, is now 12ins high, and looking like, knee high, 4th july.

Look good crops
You can take some pictures of them Dutch friesians for us to see now😂
not quite so simple, cannot download the photo's from my phone, so a bit of a rigmarole, but, no doubt, having cracked it once, there is hope. I have zero interest/knowledge, in smart phones etc, kids call me a dinosaur, stock, machinery etc, no problem.
