Let him decide for himself ffs, the boys got 10yrs of pussy and booze before he needs to have that saddle on his shoulders, my boys 19 now but our current expansion plans are my baby, his time comes in the next 5/10 yrs if he wants it
The challenge is any future investments are so there is a dairy business there if either child wants it.
If we didn't have any I would have probably exited this year or certainly be running zero investment until I did exit because it wouldn't be long enough to pay back.

no idea whether we will make as much money. But it won’t matter as much so I will much less likely to bottle it in the learning stages. . And I value experiences and relationships much more than “stuff” so money in my personal life doesn’t mean nearly as much.
plus if my son wants to farm In His own right in the future he won’t want the levels of debt I started off with in an unresilient business model.
What was unresilient about your model and what made you realise it?

25 for my boys, they’ve got to travel after being educated to degree level. If they can’t get that they’re not suitable for the role.
3 years ago I would definitely have said a degree. Not written off but it won't be via a levels. However it will be essential that numbers and budgets are completely grasped and the importance realised we may just have to find alternative routes. The days of a farmers son returning to the farm at 16 and doing a day a week at college for 2 years are gone.

F. Me what an attitude, you might be their father but you don't own them.
No he doesn't control them but what he's saying is go and experience the real world and only come back to farming if you can't find something else you would rather do.
To say it's fine to come home and I'll just give you a job and then a business because it's the easiest route is far more controlling of their future.

Within a few miles of me there are two types of farms. Those being driven by the next generation. And those where the next generation don't understand the finances want to drive the tractor all day and have no idea what's in the bank account.
The driven farms the son returned later in life the others they came home asap.

The next step is to expect more of our daughters to take up the baton because they have the skillset and not just sons.

The way some people talk about debt and how easy it it to service etc on here really makes me scratch my head with surprise, am I the only one who tries to line up a plan for the next twelve month/few years and something always comes and throws the spanners in the works. Maby I rubbish at business, but a lot of our farming involves over very changing dinamics, I wouldnt even consider the gearing people mention on here. Obviously everyone is positioned differently.

Agree with circumstances changing. Banks are next to useless for quick support or help in times when milk price plummets. I have come to conclusion my business needs going forwards to have at least 100k available to it at any time be that cash to one side or spare headroom on the overdraft.
