All things Dairy

Simples, your three men can be divided in three, and do three different things at once. While one man gets a kicking running around trying to do the same things.....
Exactly so calf rearing needs to be simple or other things will suffer.
first thing I would have done in @Jdunn55 situation was to change the vet and find the cause.
which is still unknown.

Are you booking or waiting?
No idea. Given the weather around the world I’m surprised at the drops. But what does that say In itself?
What will the milk price be next summer? Commodity milk products are falling too.
production is being to pick up in America again. What will fert prices be what will my profitability be for this yr? The jury is still out.
to many unknowns and who knows what we don’t know we don’t know.

in conclusion I will wait not in anticipation of further falls but of hopefully knowing some of the unknowns.

i need therapy 😮🤣

That time of year. A poor crop this year. June and July were hot months with little rain. Looking like an average of 12-15ton/acre wet weight, not much grain in it.
looking on u'tube, a modern dairy unit in canada, appears to use whole crop barley, as its main winter fodder, 1100 acres, of barley, some rye, and obligatory lucerne.
even more surprising, trailed forager.
@Dead Rabbits that maize, even if not properly cobbed, is providing a big heap of bulk. compared to our grass. We need quality fodder, but we also need to produce enough bulk to last the winter. If our summers are going to be drier, perhaps we should look to other semi arid dairy areas, where they have learnt to grow crops, that suit

certainly looks a lot better than above, which does show plantain, and the one chicory plant, last longer than grass and clover. While its still giving a bite, its not exactly what we either want, or need, pic is from our drier land, we do have some 'better', stuff, at the moment.
This will be strip grazed with dry cows, also wondering if the deeper rooted plants, drawing on minerals from down 'under', will benefit the cows with the extra mins. They will still get a min bolus at drying off though, just in case.

Something to smile about at last.

No it's not my second cut it's my first !
Between the shenanigans of last year, trouble in getting people to come and finish their work!
God knows how many Tb tests this spring/summer, COVID that put me out of action for nearly a week, and put me at less than half speed for three, unfavorable weather and now a change of contractor. At least there will be something for the animals to eat this winter, even though there won't be much milk in it.
With the saying if your having a bad day don't worry there is always some one worse off. I feel sorry for the poor sod who's having a worse time than me !

Onwards and upwards as they say 🙄😁
