Today's only day 3 but it's pretty slow going so far, a steady 8 a day so far. 3 week in calf rate was nothing special last year but 6 week wasn't bad so I think we're due a pretty steady 10 or so a day until late march.

Showing the youngsters how it should be done: A Netherside Dynamo daughter gives us her 9th calf (she had twins in 2015),a smart Angus bull. At 7.30 am she was building the most impressive nest in deep loose straw that I have ever seen. At 8.30 am she was happily eating silage and fodder beet. At 9.30 am she was lying in her nest cudding but no sign of a water bag or anything else. At 11am she was on her feet licking a calf off. By noon, calf bottled with 4 litres stored colostrum, Mum happily cudding and cleansed shortly afterwards. Milked through the parlour and gave us some top quality colostrum for the freezer for when the sexed semen calves start arriving in August.

3 stragglers left to calve. One looking suspiciously heavy and thin so I hope she's not bound for twins.

I put this on another thread but I thought it would be interesting to see what the general view would be regarding this flooring idea? With straw the price it is today and for us it would free up a store area, save 30 minutes every day and save the cost of a straw chopper if we could use it for our calving shed which then doubles up as a post weaning calf rearing area.

It appears to be some sort of matting that allows the urine to pass through leaving a more solid muck that can be collected by the robot. The video seems to be showing heifers but they are trialing it out with cows at the Dairy Campus in Holland. In this situation it is being targeted as a welfare flooring with the added benefit of lower ammonia loss as urine collected separately. They claim lower cost I guess through no cubicles and it can be added to a flat concrete floor.

I can't believe how green it looks,everything is grey round here,not a blade of grass anywhere.

Been jetting slurry this morn,fortunately my dad has gone on holiday to South Africa some I'm covering his farm while he's away.
