AI can get you a top notch beef bull, much better than the run of the mill stock bulls found on farm. Few of us dairy farmers, would pay the several £1,000 it needs to buy one. But that money buys an awful lot of beef semen. As we move further down the xbred route, our fertility keeps improving, the need for a quality sweeper bull decreases, our conception to 1st service, was 75%, of the other 25%, those that didn't hold to 2nd, are definitely problem breeders, some just keep on repeating, in our 7week block, we only have 2 cows, +ve, that were served x3, the next lot, not p'd, yet, 19 cows, are not pretty reading, those that are i/c, will either milk and kill, or sell i/c. So it's not really cost effective to spend several £1000, on a sweeper, ours will be a home reared bbx bull, out of a beefy cow. As we move ever closer to the ban on shooting shite calves at birth, those calves we produce, for sale, must be, of 'quality', to achieve a decent price, 2nd, or 3rd quality calves, will be heavily discounted, through the numbers available.

bit of fencing today. Found the sheep wire in a shed during a clear out in spring.Dad reckoned it was at least 25yrs old. Snippers couldn’t cut it, yet go through new wire no problem. He talks the odd bit of sense, stuff isnt made like it used to be.

Pity you didn't buy some proper strainers and posts to staple it to ;). These bad boys should outlast the wire(y)

years ago, cast a few gate posts, must be nearly 30 yrs now, 1 got hit off, by a neighbours tractor driver, who took out the falling post, as well, never worked out how he did that, and denied hitting them, but he did dig 2 posts in, afterwards. The rest still work, not the prettiest to look at, but functional. We can now get telegraph poles easily now.
