Outwintering is fine, saves us a lot of money, but, in a wet time, to the general public, it looks awful. All of us, have seen cattle, in fields, grazing kale/roots, and thought, that looks a big mess. Some are outwintering, in fields not really suitable for it. Speaking to a min vet recently, the two most common complaints, are, starving cattle, by giving them not enough grass, strip grazing ! And cattle being kept in awful conditions, and starving them, outwintering, on kale.
We accept these as normal, and certainly not a welfare issue, while the public see it as a big issue, and vocally raise it with min vets, and presumably, the RSPCA. I don't have an answer, and accept, in a wet time, it looks bad, but, if enough members of the public, complain, legislation, will follow. So, perhaps a little more thought, about the fields we use for outwintering.

And the biggest issue with the public's pets is......obesity!

Yes in places. Have to pick the field a bit. Things look much better after a dry week. And as with most social media pictures I only showed the nice bits!
much drier today, even got some bales hauled.
no f###ing hfrs through the kale fence,
cows on kale, didn't want to come in, buggers
but probably the best bit, met a local couple walking our fields, never ever seen them walking our way, name brought up in conversation, he will have 60ish acres to rent out soon, been wondering the best way 'to bring the subject up', absolutely ideal chance, have to visit him, when tenant gives his notice in, which shouldn't be to long.

I entered the yard yesterday morning to find about 60 cows running all over the place, bulldozing bales of straw and shitting everywhere. And 30 made it into a not very dry field on the laneside, for a wreck around, by flattening a section of fence. Blood pressure was elevated...

This was the week for it!

It was entirely our fault though. We were distracted day before and forgot to replace the R clip in a door bar.🤷🏻‍♂️
