back in the mid 70's, lucky to get it of in late november, maize has come a very long way since then. Very often 1 cob, and 15ft high was nearly normal. Rode round with the forager, striking out, maize taller than forager, not sure l would want to do that again, not so good on the stomach, weird.

15ft? Wow. Like 30 ton crops? Foragers wouldn't have been 9ft tall in the 70s, so can see why it wasn't nice riding around

when you see todays maize, it's a different crop, half the bulk, and twice the feed value, first year we grew it, we had a one row cutter, on our trailed forager, that rapidly changed to a two row, and nearly as rapidly evolved to a contractor, when a local one had a header. Those years pre corncracker, never even thought about cracking the grain, and it's interesting to see, whole grain is still fed in the states, more in beef than dairy. Might be interesting to say, we spent hours criss crossing the field with cotton and bamboo stakes, to stop the birds wiping it out, pre bird repellent, and it needed hard frosts, to mature.
The speed it caught on, as a feed for cattle, was amazing, considering it's not a 'natural' feed for cattle ! but it brings it's own problems, mostly environmental, and l suspect increasing regs, will curtail it's growing.
