that's not what I meant. I wasn't being critical. You can't change the weather. I always find if cows are short of grass in mid lactation they lose milk then if there is an abundance during late lactation, they grow the calf rather than regain milk.

Iv come to the conclusion that inputs like fert, cow cake anything in a shiny packet are just addictive drugs really. We all can so easily become dependent on them, and when commedity prices rise we help by the rope around our neck.

Put it this way, I have enough to get me through first cut I think and 1 or 2 grazing applications after that if the price is still up there I shall be ordering spray and red clover seed instead

Iv got 140T of home grown cereals, and hopefully maize corn to come, just need protein source. Got plenty of red clover silage but just looking at cake to drop 2kg a head in until turn out.

it looks like CF are going to start up again to save xmas, co2 is a by product of fert, so presumably it will be available again, at what cost, remains to be seen. It was pretty certain guv would pander to the green zealots, over N use, and would probably either restricted it's use by edict or tax, they wont have to now.
The amount of interlocking functions of making things, that occur, who would have thought a rise in gas price, would stop fert production, and slaughter houses, to threaten xmas.
Those zealots, lauding this position now, will they be so fanatical when they cant buy there food, either by price, or shortage.
Farmers will have to learn to cope with less fert, the price may come down, but l somehow doubt it will get back to sensible levels. Better use of shite, clover and rotation, and look over the hedge, to see what the organic boys are doing !

Rolled beans as a protein? Being a legume and therefore not needing fertiliser I can imagine they would be easier to find organically than most things?

Always find it interesting to see how you organic guys cope as I don't think itll be too long until the rest of us are encouraged or forced down the same route!
