It's so important.
Both of them will know they can do anything they want to with their lives but if they choose farming it will be because they understand it can offer them the life they want.
If they choose farming then they will have the tools to take it in their direction, i would be reluctant to set the direction.

I do think there is an unhealthy aversion to debt in a lot of these posts

If you were to look at the majority of successful companies in the world they would be carrying 30-50% of their business capital as debt.

Successful management of debt simply requires a performance that is likely to exceed future interest rates and depreciation and an understanding of all that.

If you want to know what farming with real debt is like ask @Serup. Some northern Europeans don't even think repaying the capital is worthwhile.

We have had a large debt (50% of total business) and am within five years of clearing it, few things have happened in the last month and looking likely to go 50% again and purchase a neighbours farm, take to herd up to 400 cows and do a lots of infrastructure, now just got to figure out the best plan forward.

That’s only because their laws work in that way!
debt is a very personal and age/stage of career related thing. I have perhaps done things the hard way. By only mortgaging land and doing everything thing else through the overdraft. But it does keep you on your toes. Doing building projects through the overdraft can be a bit tricky at times though. 🙁

Evergrande, the mega Chinese company has $300 billion … yes, billion … of debt.

They are rumoured to be defaulting on their repayments mind you

Your right about debt being very personal and my debt horizon has also significantly changed.

However as long as your business is well run top 25% of dairy farms your net worth in 10 years time will be greater if you keep investing and running debt than simply operating out of cashflow.

I came home to a business with fairly high debt levels, my attitude towards debt is easing but as a tenant big debt is never something I've had access to or been comfortable with..........

.......but I pay £150k + in rent each year. At current interest rates that wouldn't buy me a decent sized mortgage. My choices however are very limited because both mine and wife's parents are aging and local and there's not a chance she would move more than a few miles away.

But he's right a lot of bloody twits get educated at private schools.
Why because their parents realise that their child might not be the brightest kid out there but they also realise if they can afford it paying for that kids education will be better than hoping for the best in the state system.
It is a sad reflection on the UK that to achieve equality of education it is the private system that is knocked to bring the standards down rather than expecting the state system to be as good and therefore make the private system redundant.

I have worked with several privately educated people from the likes of Eton and Marlborough etc. Not sure I agree with it being a good investment!

Hunger, grit and intelligence is much more important
it is when you only other option is to see them struggle at the back of the class in this areas very avg state schools. I should know that was me in the 80s.
It s amazing what you’ll sacrifice to give your kids a chance.

Too true plenty of entitled prat’s, but as many who will go on to lead high flying careers. No doubt the state sector has as much variation. My children just starting out in education and trying to make the right choices for them leaves me scratching my head.

Full agreement that with hunger, determination and intelligence. Debt important to give you something to keep you keen and give the business focus. Easy to become lazy. Provided the debt isn’t strangling the business.

That much grass in Dec would be prone to frost / snow damage in these parts.

Neighbours fat lambs have gone home this week. Done a cracking job pulling the surplus off without chewing it into the ground. Left a nice leaf ready to grow.
Lamb grazing cheque should be arounf £6k. Enough to buy a load of fert. ---------------- Well last year it did :(
