We don’t get any gossip if they go direct.
Faster going to the slaughterhouse because there’s no one to gossip to.
The clean I sent did better through the ring.
Get paid faster when they go live.
Live deductions were over double the dead.

I’m placed central to both the mart or the slaughterhouse,I prefer sending them dead but my wife loves the social of the mart,I’ll just do a bit of both, same as always.
If I send live it’s 1.5 hours for 3 different sale barns. If I send to slaughter it’s 6 hours.

5 miles to my nearest mart and 10 to the nearest slaughterhouse,I use the slaughterhouse that’s 16 miles away but a good road and a mart that’s 13miles away, another couple of marts within 25 mile and another couple of slaughterhouse’s within 25 miles, nothing needs to travel far near me.

We tested just shy of 900 this week and had one solitary reactor today. I'll investigate AFUs next week when I've calmed down but I will probably have to rear 400 blue and Hereford calves this spring to 8 weeks before either giving them away or sending them to slaughter and it means my 40 cows due to calve in August will all be culled this month. Tb will end my farming career before anything else. Sh!t day..
Why cull the 40 they can be sold to another TB unit, if we weren't organic we would be interested. Surely worth more than cull value of smaller cows.

I feel your pain. Had a in calf heifer go down as a reactor yesterday rang up today £840 quid 🤬😡 where on earth do they get these prices.
There is a large scale dairy not a million miles from myself and Mr F that keep losing, huge amounts every test. Lost 30/40 ped Holsteins in November.

I think they've been shut down for close to 15yrs🤬

Not dairy related but the potato boys are flat out next door. 10 tractors working in this field.

you need some help, to get things sorted out, and back under control. If you don't, you will be chasing your arse sorting messes out, and never succeeding, and leave the 'proper' - which pays the bills, - not being done, because you spend all your time, dealing with 'disasters'. And it really doesn't take a lot to get straight, once done, life is so much easier. Just spend some precious cash, and do it.

Split pins
Reverse hangings
Chains
Clips
D shackles

To prevent different bunches getting together

Pit flooded?
2nd submersible pump as back up.

Belive it or not, where the dry cows got in with the milkers was through the one spot I thought safe!!! Had a sheeted door there and they've pushed against it that hard, the latch has pushed through the wooden stanchion/pole and let them in with eachother!! Just bad luck that one

I'm not allowed gates remember, I'll go bankrupt! 😉
The pit works off gravity and leads indirectly to the dirty water pit but unfortunately like most things on this farm, the levels are far from perfect and sand builds up in the middle of the pipe causing blockages right in the middle where you can't reach it from either manhole cover 😡

Dubiously latched gates also have chains.
Doesn't mean they always get shut though 🙄

Can’t be doing with chains what a faff.
Only on gates latching into wood.
Better than a cow done the splits after two bunches getting together.

Ideally a metal surround firmly attached to said wooden post is ideal.

Split pins in spring loaded gate latches give up after a time as well.

all our yard gates have a chain, bolted on, and a clip. Made me think, we only have 2 yard gates that shut properly with a bolt, having altered, redesigned our yards, everything works on those chains and clips, they work very well, and l have a supply of new clips, ready to replace any that get lost, or spring gets weak. Before l started to bolt the chains to the gates, needed a fair spare box of chains and clips. But so cheap and easy, and better than string.

I’m glad you’ve all got so much time. Also the more actions required the less likely it is to be done well.
But then I only have two groups of animals.

a lot of our gates are double, or designed to meet with more than 1 other, to direct cattle, one way, or another. so chain and clip, are best option. And, as chain bolted onto gate, not a lot extra time. We would have 5 lots of cattle, to move round.
