anybody preempted a big push/demandfor grazing type dairy x calves and ditched BB for Hereford/Angus? If we have a clear test next week I am tempted to. Only reason for using BB is ensuring a saleable calf at 10 days old even if down with TB.

We're a flying herd and use blue and Hereford for AI and Hereford sweeper bulls ,currently have purchased incalf cows and some are in calf to Angus, good calves but can't give them away ( some have been caught buying what looks like Angus and were found to be xbred bull calves, with a white face should be safer), not pulled a blue this year other than a backwards set of twin's, hardest part is finding short gestation light birth weight bull (bull we used last year is not available 🙈) , we've sold blues just over £500 as calves, just can't see any other breed doing that as calves , Hereford 100 quid back , but can sell all heifers of farm with premium, even when we're down with tb.
As a flying herd we don't purchase heifers, so unless your going to sell cows on think beef is better option.

Couple of questions on drinkers...

Where do you put them... Edge of field? Middle of field? On track?

Someone pointed out to me that in NZ, round concrete drinking troughs are used, but here we only have rectangular. Anyone in UK got circular?

Suppose it depends on cow numbers, I have found the flow of water to be the most important thing, Nearly all mine are in fence lines so do multiple fields. One is on a wide track corner so cows can carry on past while some drink it works fine.

As above, I can't bide to see a big deep tank with half a hedge and other unmentionables in the bottom, yet the water level is never seen more than 6 inches from the top
