I've a cow here that belongs to a friend, he did his ai course a couple of years ago and had ai'd several cows for me with no success. He ai'd his one to sexed Jersey and got it in calf, bloody typical I thought! She was due yesterday, calved today, not only is it not a heifer, its not even a Jersey! Not sure how it happened but looks like our Longhorn bull got there first. View attachment 1035600
Good thing it’s not a heifer. If there is any similarity to American long horns they do not make good milk cows when crossed to a jersey. Based on the two I’ve milked.

And tonight, tomorrow night and Tuesday. Should get some
earliest our stream has dried up, several springs stopped running
nice big heap of silage, rain will be very welcome.

cows were a fair trade yesterday, even some very plain ones, the dearest l saw on marteye, was £2400, for a 44month old heifer, for many farmers, that should be i/c to its 3rd, it will make a good barrener though ....

didn't show up on marteye.
which is one reason l wouldn't really want to bid on marteye, prefer my own thick glasses.
main dispersal looked to be a very good sale, son only bought 1, but there's a lot of cows coming onto the market, plenty of time to pick up a few, with barren price where it is, we are looking to swop out older/baggy cows, with younger ones. Achieved £726, after stoppages, for an empty jx this week, serious money for what it was, a amber johnes cow.
And, much to his relief, a good journey back, this time of year, it can be horrendous.

3 for 2 deal on cows then.

Was the classic herd with "longevity " with a "catalogue full of younger cows"

Maybe a handful I would have been happy to take home.

What was the i/c heifer trade like? Had to scoot off as youngest was playing cricket against Exeter

Might need a separate thread, but... Best value quad/gator/similar? New or 2nd hand?

To be used for electric fencing paddocks etc.

Diesel preferred but seem rare as hen's teeth. Don't care about performance as long as reliable and runs...

didn't watch them
never to sure about 'xmany 1st, 2nd and 3rd's' always seems to imply they don't last.
2 + 3 calves, seems to be our exchange rate. Had weaned fr up to £360 yesterday. But its the same old story, go to the sales, sit on your hands, and wait for the 'right' ones.
Trouble today is, a lot of cows bought on finance, so farmers looking to spend it, at 1 sale, drives the price up. Having said that, a lot of 'cheaper end' are not much above killing price.

All round, its a funny old trade, even the calf trade is different, with milk powder well over £2,000 ton, concentrates the mind rather, the weaned off calves, are wanted.
