allis chalmer b

I didnt know if anyone was able to help me please?
I recently purchased a allis chalmer b, with the log book.
But i have checked the serial number number and it doesnt match with the tractor, i didnt know if i put the serial number i have found on the tractor on here if anyone could tell me the year please? Its B25172. Many thanks.

Looks like an American built in 1939, British built would be "EB" , hadn't known there were British built Allis.

The tariffs were set to protect UK production and to get the low tariff a certain amount of the tractor would require building in the UK.
often these tariffs were crucifying to ensure local jobs. Still some countries such as India have very high rates.

Allis had an assembly factory at Essendine near Stamford. I believe the bits were crated in from America.

I ccould never understand why the B and the D272 had such small rear wheels. I think that they looked rather silly. Rear wheel traction would probably be improved if they were larger.

We have a 1943 B which has much wider back tyres than normal and mudguard extensions. I think they were originally imported through Southampton as AC had an assembly plant at Totton- I was reading an article on local Spitfire production during the early war years and Allis Totton were mentioned as parts suppliers. Ours has the American bowed front axle, but when Essendine opened post war, the UK models were given a squared off adjustable axle.

The B only weighs a ton, it's not going to have better traction without more weight than that. Rubber tires were new and expensive then, steel wheels were still available, and this was an economy tractor, so big tires weren't likely.

There you go, that's me on the seat. Notice the lever for lifting the beet hoes - no hydraulic assistance then.

Thats a late one with a sprung seat.
My granddad had an earlyish one with bench seat and hand brakes but I don't know if it was bow axle or not
I have one with bench seat and foot brakes and straight axle and a hoe much like that as well as a cultivator, non runner at the moment, spose to be my retirement project if I get there

One with a Perkins engine, later still. This was 1958, the previous photo must have been 53 or 54

The front wheels are held on with rivets which means it is early

Some of the early American "B" s were Lease Lend tractors, and were supplied on steel wheels.
