Alpaca Farming

Hi all

A dream of our family's has been to farm alpaca's. I have seen a few places with agricultural land for sale. We wont be far from the land in question. As the land is classed as agricultural would we be able to put a temporary shelter up for them and move them on to the land without any form of paperwork e.t.c. As i said we really wouldn't be far from the land incase we had to get there quick. This would be our first time doing something like this. There is a place we have seen that you can go to and they teach you about looking after Alpacas and we certainly would not get any until the alpaca farm thought we were ready and had enough knowedge about them. Many Thanks.

Put me on the list for an alpaca steak please.

Unless you mean alpaca walking and petting, which I sincerely hope doesn't count as farming.
Hiya

No, We won't be doing this for petting and walking lol. My dad used to have a farm back home in Ireland (not alpacas). I left the army due to PTSD and I would rather be out in the countryside rather than in the town. We have seen a house that we like near a village so will sell our house and move there. There is a local farmer that has a couple of acres he is willing to sell us. I wasn't sure about the process of putting livestock on the land. In other words if I needed permission first. It is classed as agricultural land but obviously they would need a proper structure so do i need planning before moving them onto the land etc. Thanks for your reply and take care.

Aha, so you're probably interested more in knowing if there are any hoops to jump through between having a couple of pets in a garden, to having more of a smallholding. Things like admin, cph number if needed, and suitable insurance?

Hi

yeah that's what I meant, I don't think I explained myself properly so I do apologise. They are not going to be used as pets and will be used for farming purposes and farming alone. It's the process of putting them on the land and putting a structure on the land for them that i'm trying to get to grips with. Others have said to just move them onto the land and put up a temporary structure for them and then contact the relevant departments and others have said to contact the relevant departments first and sort out the paperwork before hand.

:)

Post in the livestock section something like "What Paperwork Do I Need For Small Scale, Commercial Alpacas?"

And something in the Planning section re structure. "Planning Requirements For Alpacas Shelter".

Will get you better responses.
