Anyone on here keep alpacas? Just wondering how easy they are to keep, fencing requirements (i.e do they jump!) how hardy are they in Winter etc.
and they are bad for spreading TB
I'd agree with the above. They respect fences well apparently. The teeth grow and need to be trimmed, as naturally they are warn down by eating close to the rocks.Hate the wet, dont jump, need a pair, they spit/kick, expect to come under regs before long, they need their claws and teeth attending to, a lot of p poor specimens about, too many being passed from pillar to post on sites like pre loved, it is about time they were more regulated.
What is the point of Alpacas?
And they get tb compensation, non on pigs though.and they are bad for spreading TB
The abattoir I use has alot of alpacas come through for meat, I think he is the only licensed one in england to do it so far!
There are about 7 abattoirs licensed now, from Cornwall to Cumbria. Several owners doing alpaca-packs.
Tastes bloody good, we eat a good bit here. Had some living with the ewes for a while but they kept attacking the dogs .Oh wow, his website is out of date now then! still claims to be the only one
I wonder what it tastes like
They can cope with high altitude, so appear healthy even when lungs full of tband they are bad for spreading TB
not yet they dont, consultation period has only just closedAnd they get tb compensation, non on pigs though.
They aren't magic!were they kept with the sheep to deter wolves?
will they keep people on a footpath?
So do cows mostly! Bovine Tb and bovines are good buddies! They can cope with high altitude, so appear healthy even when lungs full of tb
There was a programme on TV last year (I think) about that. They cross easily with llamas which reduces the quality of the fibre, fibre from pure alpaca is very fine but still not as fine as the Inca were using. In their homeland valuable fleece & I guess they eat them too, perhaps milk & beast of burden pack horse style. The garments in Inca tombs have better qualty fibres than any Alpacas alive today, so breeding needs to be improved.
But you'd think there was one or two more pigs about and they'd be a priority.not yet they dont, consultation period has only just closed
