An easy tractor to rip apart and put back together

Young lad here is showing a keen interest in mechanics. I want to buy him some cheap tractor that runs already put which he can rip to pieces and put back together easily to learn how tractors work. Probably something without a cab and not overly big. Maybe something like a Mf 135 but equally something for about 2000 to 3000. I want him to try ripping apart a gearbox to check cogs, bearings etc and put back together. Take clutch out to check, take head off, be able to check brakes etc . And if it goes back together and goes bang nothing ventured nothing gained. Its just a project really to learn from.

Recommendations for a good tractor for this?

If you can stretch try to get a bit more modern with some electrics. Probably more valuable knowledge than gears and bearings

Nothing simpler than a fe35 but the best learning I had was while on work experience from school, pulled apart a dB 1494 with broken hydra shift.
Cab off and plenty of stripping down which is all good learning. On my last day we ran it up with the top cover off to check all the brake bands worked, fascinating and satisfying watching it go threw all the gears.
Doubt you'd get one for the right money now though.

I would try and get something with a few electrics, as everything is going that way. I’d also try and get it 12v positive earth, which rules out a few like the TE20?

I cut my teeth on a 7810 deere. Probably a bit over the top but start with say a cheap one with transmission problems, master the transmission and next winter give another section of the tractor a makeover.
About as simple of a modern tractor out there in my unblinkered opinion 😁
Also you would have something useful and potentially valuable when he's through with it.
Manuals are readily available online as well, a lot can be learned by studying those before and during the project.

Top marks to you as a dad for giving him an opportunity to grow 👍

Great idea wouldn't worry what brand you go for cheap and cheerful would be my thinking. What tractors do you have knowledge of or is there someone you know he could go to for help and advice when needed, a retired spanner man would be good. Maybe a non runner would be a greater achievement to get going

No one is wrong for saying something with some electrics would be good as looking further ahead that knowledge will be needed. But imho that's the next step keep it simple for a start. If he gets in over his head on the first one that'll be the end of it and in any case when you take a modern tractor to bits they are all still based on basic mechanicals and a lot of "fitters" now lack the basic knowledge of how something works and thats why they can't fix anything just swap parts.

What ever you do dont get a Holder C500. Took my Holder in with a simple gearbox problem to local workshop who specialise in John Deere. Not a problem in stripping it down and charging 1k for the privilege but 2 years on and they seem clueless at putting it back together again threatening a further cost of 2.5k in the hope I will just bin it and go away. Dont really know what to do. Have already tried to help them by putting the stones back in the gearbox selectors as they could not do it.
