Young lad here is showing a keen interest in mechanics. I want to buy him some cheap tractor that runs already put which he can rip to pieces and put back together easily to learn how tractors work. Probably something without a cab and not overly big. Maybe something like a Mf 135 but equally something for about 2000 to 3000. I want him to try ripping apart a gearbox to check cogs, bearings etc and put back together. Take clutch out to check, take head off, be able to check brakes etc . And if it goes back together and goes bang nothing ventured nothing gained. Its just a project really to learn from.
Recommendations for a good tractor for this?
I wouldn’t get one with computers and screens or even electric hitch. Just something thats got a bit more than ‘start’ and pull to stop. A few worklights and a radio, that’s all.No one is wrong for saying something with some electrics would be good as looking further ahead that knowledge will be needed. But imho that's the next step keep it simple for a start. If he gets in over his head on the first one that'll be the end of it and in any case when you take a modern tractor to bits they are all still based on basic mechanicals and a lot of "fitters" now lack the basic knowledge of how something works and thats why they can't fix anything just swap parts.
For the OP’s 2-3000 budget?!What about a massey 3000 series. Ticks all the boxes. Easy enough worked on,has electrics, parts arent gonna cost the earth, could be bought at reasonable money, very capable tractors if u wanted to use them and nice to drive, could be bought well worth the money and last but certainly not least if he restored it hed have 1 of the nicest lookin tractors ever built View attachment 1009320
Imo that is very nice
If hes wantin to rip it apart u could probably get a non runner. For the OP’s 2-3000 budget?!
If its within budget by £1 but needs a grand in bits to get it going it's over budget. Potentially gets a lot more tractor at the end thoughIf hes wantin to rip it apart u could probably get a non runner.
Ok bit over budget but not far off and would be nice wee handy workin tractorIf its within budget by £1 but needs a grand in bits to get it going it's over budget. Potentially gets a lot more tractor at the end though
