And we thought climate change would wipe out humanity....

The issue with population decline and sudden high levels of infertility or people choosing not to procreate is an aging population. We can say how fantastic a shrinking world population will be for the planet, but who's going to care for all the elderly. Imagine for a moment that your children or grandchildren were the last generation to be born.....

The report was on western society.

Other societies (except Japan who are in serious trouble with exactly as you point out) are still breeding quite happily.

All hail the Radfords .... 22 kids and counting

All areas of the world are seeing a drop in both reproduction and fertility rate. I can't remember where I read it, but the average age in countries like Italy will be over 50 by the end of the century.

Chavs don't seem to struggle having kids though 🤷🏻‍♂️

Isn't soya with its phytoestrogen creeping into everyday diets just as likely to be the issue?
Heaps of reasons combined.
Birth control, sedentary lifestyle, sh!t food and overcrowding to name a few.

Whether it will "threaten humanity" in the manner the link suggests or simply force a massive rethink is another matter.

It's not the reduction in births that's the thing to think about. It's what we do as a society to maintain ourselves when the average age is over 50. How do we keep society going when people aren't young enough to do the jobs, such as agriculture to sustain society.

I wonder how that all pans out in 60 year's time when elderly kids are trying to cope with elderly parents and their own elderly kids.... because welfare, as we know it, just isn't going to be available.
There kids will have kids at 15/16 and the same going forward they’ll probably have great great grand kids .

A great rethink and revolution...
Food is pretty easy, unless we give away our rights to save seed.
Most octogenerians around here pride themselves in their gardening skills, and they don't even have plough/DD handbag fights!!

Just because today relies on make believe jobs in offices and suchlike, I only see that as being temporary. A good economic crash in the near future will relegate most of them to the unemployed list, and suddenly food will be as important as drugs and consumer items.

In civilisations past, which crashed as ours will crash, there was a great emphasis on passing down knowledge from the elderly.
Sad to think that many of these vital life skills are going to be lost well before they are needed again, but at least granny will be able to show them how to make a crack pipe out of an old indicator bulb (y)
