We had 2 earless sheep dumped at a gateway, they were wrapped in bale wrap along with the scissors probably used to cut ears off.
Luckily they were on the council's side of gate, so they paid for fallen stock company to collect them

I would suspect someone employed to check on livestock is being less than diligent in their efforts and disposing of the evidence on the way home.
That said, a few years back we did a bit of digging the other side of the hedge to a well travelled B road in order to find a duct under the road for a water pipe. We put a new mains pipe through the duct, and left the trench open at the joins to check for leaks. When the digger man went back to finish filling in, he found some dirty b*gger had taken advantage and buried 2 lambs in a bag.

Good and bad small farms.

Good and bad large farms.

On another social media site the other day chap who bought a small holding and has less than 10 suckler cows wanted to know why the calves were dying 6/7 days after being born, said he didn't know what was wrong with them and that all the calves that have died had not suckled their mothers until he helped them 4/5 days after they were born!:banghead::banghead::banghead:

To be blunt - I do not believe that story.

You are a well experienced stockman. What percentage of calves that are born with nobody in attendance (normal in a lot of the world) fail to suckle? No argumentative response, just answer the simple question.

I am not comprehending a motive for this:scratchhead:. Is it a problem to dispose of dead lambs in Dorset?
When we have animals die we make a call and hopefully, next day, sometimes a bit longer, a lorry comes and takes them away. We pay an annual subscription for this service so each individual occasion has no cost impact.

Same here, except it is done free of charge to the individual farmer. The service is provided by a government agency that is obviously financed from public funds, but it is in the interests of the whole country to have the carcasses disposed of in a proper manner.

Phone early enough in the morning (except weekends) and they can be collected the same day, otherwise next day.
