Animal cruelty

Nobody use culling pliers then?
Funny you should say that , that's what I always think when people earnestly discuss how they ear notch culls. Don't know how well that would go down with Mr and Mrs Average.

Well , actually I do , it wouldn't go down well at all. Maybe people should find another way of doing this that wouldn't offend more delicate sensibilities.

I think farmers would be shocked at the everyday things they do that would repulse the urban consumer.

I'm afraid this attitude is prevalent. Farming really isn't getting it is it?? This isn't just vegans, this isn't just nutters, this is real people - our customers who are leaving in droves. This is this biggest threat to livestock farming - much bigger than brexit or subsidies!! If people don't want to eat meat the industry is buggered!!! Wake up and smell the coffee!!
actually what I said is true,

Do they teach much about animal behaviour and handling at vet colleges these days? Not much in my day. In fact, I can't remember it even being mentioned.

Judging by some of the animal 'rescue' programs on TV, not much. Sickens me how they wave a broken limb around for the camera, just to show how bad the fracture is. Must cause suffering and is certainly unnecessary. Some seem quite fond of doing this.

Yes, some suffering in animal management is necessary but that doesn't mean it is cruel. I was teaching a young pony to lead yesterday amd he had to learn that pulling back was not a good idea. Sheep that don't know a dog can bite aren't easy to herd! Plenty more examples, Nature created pain for a reason.
