Discharging firearm, airgun, pistol, or restricted weapon in or near dwellinghouse or public place

A person commits an offence and is liable on conviction to imprisonment for a term not exceeding 6 months, or to a fine not exceeding $10,000, if the person, without reasonable excuse, discharges a firearm, airgun, pistol, or restricted weapon in or near a dwellinghouse or a public place so as to—

(a)

endanger property; or

(b)

endanger, annoy, or frighten any person.

a road is a public place but the get out of jail card is "without reasonable excuse"
the animal welfare act would be just reson

I don't think the law prohibits discharging of a firearm near or on a road, unless a road user is inconvenience, though the law might have been changed. I used to take shooting on an estate and the owner presided as 'shoot organiser', probably for tax reasons. He took great delight in having a stand on one drive literally on the verge of a busy commuter route, probably just so he could tell plod to do one! How many would willingly take a peer of the realm to court? Anyway, he was eventually stopped!

But it does raise an interesting point. If plod tried to stop you shooting a road casualty and you went ahead anyway, what's the legal position? You've got the gun so it would be a brave constable who tried to use his physical force to stop you! I have no problem with law breaking if that is the sensible thing to do, but then I would be willing to take the consequences if caught. The law sometimes is an ass but the courts usually have some latitude and I'd rely on good sense for at least a single south facing cell! :)
Theres shoots with drives where the guns stand on a lane. You're not committing an offence unless you're causing fear and distress or inconvenience to other road users.
So although standard/good practice is not to discharge a firearm within 50ft of the centre of the carriageway in actual fact you can still be causing an offence by causing fear and distress by discharging a firearm even though you're not on or near the carriageway.

I've got a 357 conditioned for Humane Animal Dispatch specifically. I can down load it with 38sp ammo for lambs although it's a little bit much for small lambs but with the 357mag ammo there's not much it wouldn't kill in a humane dispatch situation. Small calibre firearms are perfect if you're doing a lot of HAD but if you're only killing one animal once in a blue moon a 12g is reassuringly effective.
