Final reminder to all stock farmers, hauliers, livestock agents and others that the deadline for response submissions to the DEFRA consultation is this Thursday 25th February. I would urge you all to respond.

As someone who assisted with much of the background detail for the NFU response, I've seen an embargoed draft and I am full of admiration by just how much their team has put together in the timeframe and on behalf of the sector

Do we know when Defra will give its response?

They have not expressly stated

I would HOPE the Minister is sufficiently embarrassed as to the pejorative language (NGO phrasing), lack of credible EVIDENCE from the FAWC review they procured in 2018 and the sheer impracticality of much of the proposals, that they choose to go in to a sustained period of consultation and not implement as they hinted by the end of the year

More than likely. The optimist in me wants to believe this consultation has merely been to appease the NGO's and that DEFRA will simply kick this can down the road for a few more years yet.

@JP1 You no me and IT! But I sent a long piece about this to my MP Ms Victoria Atkins whose researcher has forwarded it Baron Gardiner of Kimble who apparently is Parliamentry Under Secretary of State for Rural Affairs and Biosecurity. Apparently he is a partner in a family farm in Buckinghamshire. They promise to keep me informed. We await with interest!!!

Dear Liam,

Thank you for your email of 7 January 2021 on behalf of your constituent, ** ****** ****** , regarding the consultation on proposals to
introduce temperature limits on livestock transport. I apologise for the delay in responding
Defra is currently dealing with high volumes of correspondence due to COVID-19. Thank
you for your understanding during this challenging time.
The Government is committed to the welfare of all animals and to making further
improvements to animal welfare in transport now that we have left the EU.
Scotland’s Rural College and the University of Edinburgh conducted a systematic review
of scientific research on the welfare of animals during transport and at markets. Evidence
from the systematic review fed into consideration by Defra’s expert committee - the Farm
Animal Welfare Committee – and the consultation proposals where based on the
Committee’s report and recommendations on improving the welfare of animals during
transport.
Thermal conditions and ventilation are a key aspect of protecting animal welfare in
transport as extreme temperatures and poor ventilation can cause animal welfare issues to
arise. Animals being transported are at risk of welfare issues arising due to sudden or
severe changes in temperature, during very hot or very cold weather, and this can affect
mortality rates if internal temperatures inside the vehicles cannot be maintained. It should
be noted that the proposals in the consultation document do not affect short journeys
under 65km.
I am grateful to your constituent for taking the time to provide his views on this aspect of
the consultation.

What a disgrace

1. Welfare is welfare no matter 1km or 1000km
2. The review of the SRUC 2018 report should have one conclusion : "more research needed and we'll equivocate in the meantime"
3. I cannot comment on poultry but the DOA stats should show ambient temperatures have little impact on livestock in transit with appropriate ventilation and bedding
4. The DEFRA consultation does not mention control of internal temperature only an embargo on movement outwith 5-30 degrees ambient.

That is an absolutely shocking , shallow and inept reply. Are we really sure he's from a farming background ?

I would imagine Liam Fox's constituent was left equally amazed and underwhelmed

So when your cattle are booked into the abattoir a week in advance how are they supposed to control throughput when a change in the weather can cause chaos?
If only they hadn't driven all the local abattoirs out of business, forcing our livestock into journeys of over 65km to slaughter.
