If it's an old thread, how can the post be put up today without us being able to see the replying posts? If there were no replies 6 years ago, today's post would be, in effect, a reply to the original and both new an old would be shown.

Well, I don't know why / how it's been dug up, but I'll put money on it being one of Sleepy's phantom accounts to try and drum up trade on the forums first days.
And in the absence of any Pesky kids he and Clive managed to get away with it

Its not a new thread, its an old thread started around the time the forum began, probably on the 1st page of the 'Agricultural Matters' section. There is no way it should have appeared in your 'New Posts' feed.
I would imagine you have somehow clicked on something to take you to page 1 of 'Agricultural Matters', thought the list of threads were current threads that were posted today, now you have replied to this thread its appearing on everyone else's 'New Posts' feed as it has new posts in it. Can't think of any other reason.

I don't use the New Posts method of catching up, as there are many forum catagories that are of little interest.
So here we are on page 1 of Agricultural matters with all the latest posts and Jim's post appeared (his original post is now on page 819), I didn't notice the 2013 date. What is the mechanism whereby it could appear today? If I wanted to bring an old post up today, I would have to post something that would count as being a reply, therefore, more than 1 post would be shown.
