The problem is the farmer is always liable for the behaviour of his stock ( dangerous animals act) so the walkers can behave like complete t**ts and wind up the most placid of cow but ultimately the buck stops with the farmer. Less cows on this farm is inevitable I am afraid there is just too many walkers who know their “rights”

It's a shame they know there rights but not know enough of anything else... Would you go to a safari park, get out of your car and go annoy a Lion? No, well.. some idiot would I suppose, but in general, Lions are dangerous.. so are cows if they feel threatened.. and their blooming heavy !

Why can’t we just stick a sign up saying walk so we’re else because of livestock

It’s bad enough at lambing time seeing people with dogs walking threw fields never mind the cows

Now that just infuriates me.... again, as a responsible dog owner, you do not take your dog off lead into a field with any livestock let alone one with lambs..

Like it or not a public right of way is part of the Queen's highway and subject to the same protection in law as all other highways, including trunk roads. So perhaps it's time to accept that a field with a footpath across it has less value than one without a path because of the hassle!

As for lions and Safari parks this was me in 1975 (so I'm probably that idiot)

I think with all this there needs to be some common sense.. I enjoy walking on the field paths and relish being marginally closer to cows, sheep etc.. but would not let my dog off lead, I would not let my children go running around the field or getting too close. When cows have calves, I would not even go into the field in the first place.

As a volunteer farm worker, I've seen first hand what can happen with cows/bulls.. One bull has sent me airborne and over the fence!! I think it's right to have public foot paths but I also think the public should use those paths at their own risk and use some bloody common sense.
Sometimes you won't know your in a field with cows in till its too late. Not all fields are fully visible from the entrance.

I doubt they would have a footpath through the lions enclosure either.

Should farmers put cows and calves in fields with footpaths?

Why not ? Why should one man's recreation cost another man's income ?
50% of my fields have footpaths( only got 4 fields ). Gave up keeping tack sheep 2 years ago, as it was obvious keeping sheep was incompatible with roaming dogs, and gates left open. I'm lucky, I can crop the fields instead, others may have land that's only fit for livestock ?

I wish someone ( NFU:rolleyes: ) would grasp the nettle and sort this out once and for all. As I said earlier, there's solutions. Otherwise, they'll just be more and more deaths.

as we move towards more countryside stewardship, this is a problem that isn't going to go away, it's going to increase. We all know it could be easily resolved, if the rambler society, and a few local nuts, were prepared to sit down, and have a sensible dialogue with landowners, and worked out a comprehensive footpath system, that avoided trouble points, concentrating on giving walkers a 'nice' walk with good views, perhaps parking etc, instead of '' I know my rights, I can walk there '' attitude, a very workable compromise could be achieved, we all know a bit of commonsense has to be applied to those walkers, with dogs etc, how the hell you get there, ain't got a clue. But it's a problem that is only going to increase unfortuantly.

This is the thing. I have about 100 metres of footpath that cuts a corner of a field. Common sense says walk round the perimeter. They get more footpath. I can fence it off. Simples. But it's not simple:(

You should be able to shut footpaths for safety reasons and not have to provide anything
Why not? I suspect in many case the public right of way was there long before you were. The industry needs to educate people from outside better so i'm not sure shutting them out and alienating them is the way to do that. I suspect if you were able to shut footpaths if livestock were in fields there would be plenty of farmers who keep livestock in certain fields 365 days a year just to be difficult

It's the law so you have to live with it. Anyway, is the planet short of people?
