Antibiotics.

I take it you guys using very little ABs don't have CODD then☹
Go through spells of thinking I've got on top of it then it goes through a bunch of lambs like a dose of salts.

My AB use would drop to less than 25% of what it is now without it.

unfortunately some people do go to doctor for ABs with sore throats and colds. Hence why human AB resistance is rising.

People do not understand that antibiotics, like the vast majority of drugs, are not 'harmless'. They have side effects, not least wiping out a good portion of your own natural gut/skin microflora. A number of them also take some hard work by the liver to metabolise. Why you would seek the things out on the assumption they will cure just about anything is beyond me. They have literally zero effect on viruses and most fungal organisms.

We are in a weird time where everyone will voluntarily take antibiotics, powerful drugs they do not understand but refuse to take vaccines because of imagined side effects or cost.

just like a good vet. But some patients/customers can be very forceful. And not all medical professionals have the required moral courage.

A doctor can tell you to get stuffed (politely) with zero financial risk to his business.

A young vet, recently qualified who is being leaned on, hard, by old Fred the farmer, solid customer for 20 years? Suddenly not so straight forward.

I had Codd a few years ago and got rid of it in 28 days. AB use doubled or not tripled for that year because of that one period.

Anyone know what the opposite to antibiotic is?

That’s what I did, 4 days on, 2 days off for 3-4 weeks until it stopped, during tupping and never had such a high scanning % :banghead:
That’s what we do here. Don’t stand them in it just run then through a few times. It does work and when Linco or LA 200 is unpopular it’s another option. We have a big rectangle pen type bath and just keep running them through. Just don’t put too many long toes through or you will snap you scissors or put someone’s eye out. Dont make bath too deep or it will take some leg hairs off.
Oh and don’t scratch your arse until you’ve washed your hands !!

A good Dr wouldn't just prescribe ABs.
Case in point yesterday , daughter at Drs, sore throat 39 temp. Throat swab and blood test done at lab across road. ABs prescribed for tonsillitis.
Wife sick today , temp and sore throat, same Dr, rang lab for the girls results. Examined wife. No ABs , take paracetamol cough medicine .
Sounds ok but swab result 2 days wait here? Be careful not to treat the lab results and not the patient.

Have you tried formalin 40 at double strength?

We were part of Joe Angel's trial to eradicate it several years ago using mycotil.
It worked, seemingly, for 12 months or more, then it started creeping back in.
I suspect it's down to also having cattle on farm and taking a lot of dairy keep.

Have made use of formalin in the past, but want to get set up to easily footbath everything each time it's in the yard. Hopefully at least keep it more under control then.

you can make cheap efficient large foot baths from external ply, 2x4 and silicone sealant. Will get some photos tomorrow.

I had CODD in tack lambs 2 years ago. Footbathing everypaddock move and Draxxin sorted it in the end. don’t know if it was a long term fix though.

Got plans to build a concrete one, but would be interested to see your ply ones all the same.
My concrete one is next to a 10ft stone wall, it’s 35’ long and brush width at the bottom, hurdles the other side which was higher than standard ones as the dip is next to it. Years ago when dipping a gate would swing across the footbath to divert ewes from the footbath straight into the dip, run them through the footbath for 2 days before dipping and they’d fly through.

Being able to sweep my footbath out is a godsend as young lambs can run through a dry concrete area instead of the water in it, if it’s raining then add straw so the lambs can run along it without noticing anything..

Phages are used in preference to antibiotics in the old communist countries (USSR).

Each has to be matched to the bacteria it likes to consume, and I don't know beyond that without looking it up.

Wow...

You are banging on this thread about cutting drug usage yet are quite happy to use across the board one of the most highly used drugs on the critical list ( Draxxin ) that all vets/ supermarkets etc want farmers to stop using........

Sounds like its one rule for you and another for everyone else!

30% of lambs that die from watery mouth means that in real terms the resistance is much less than 30% across the UK flock as most lambs will not get watery mouth if they were treated at birth!

How do they test if live lambs have resistance to it??

Prevention is better than cure and that goes for any disease!

You test samples from dead lambs, or scouring lambs. I was losing too many cades on a machine about 10 years ago, so got my vet involved to investigate. We tested stomach contents & poo iirc, and the result came back that they had E.Coli bacteria that was resistant to spectinomycin. That wasn’t the cause of the losses as it turns out, but resistance nonetheless. The prophylactic Spectam that I had been using for many years would have been proliferating the number of resistant bacteria in the gut by reducing their competition (by taking out all susceptible bacteria, good or bad).

I still use it for indoor lambs, effectively, but only on a more targeted basis these days. One day, it just won’t work, it’s as simple as that. Widespread prophylactic use will hasten the arrival of that day. Wake up before it’s too late, as what will you do then?

And who are you to talk after your Spectam chat?!?
