Just checked our 590 (& 690) and 1/2 discs floating in the tester after adding some more anti freeze (had to get some water out) to put fresh in drain tap on near side at base of rad? Pulled some coolant out of the header tank and ran to motor to mix, didn’t want to risk damage to the tap looked a bit crusty…

That's the way to do it - however the corrosion inhibitors in the antifreeze lose effectiveness over time and the whole lot should be replaced at regular intervals. Just how regular is regular is a matter between your wallet and the manufacturers guidelines.

My concern was having bought the 590 earlier this year it may not have had much if any in it, it did and looked pretty fresh but an extra half a gallon will help. 690 had better protection on the dip but coolant looked older, it will be getting some work done in the new year hopefully and will dip the coolant and replace when it gets oil and filter change (started quite well is the pre heat on the key?) considering it had been sat for a month or 2 and not started temps down in single digits but not had any hard frosts here yet so hopefully protected enough

Always had JD's here, which have wet liners.
As a young lad I "helped" a fitter change some liners on a 2120 that had been 'holed' from cavitation.
On the water jacket side of the liners, it looked like someone had been at them with a jack hammer!!.
Our water is so hard here and he said use de-mineralised water, not tap water and "get ya dad to change the oil more often, its cheaper than rebuilding an engine"

Went to buy some antifreeze yesterday, only to be asked ‘what colour do you want?’
Had a choice of 5 different colours.
Can anyone explain in basic terms the difference in the ‘colours’ please.
I can away with blue for the tractors and pink for one of the kids car, came with a warning not to mix the different colours!

Blue i think is old school ethylene glycol the red and green are modern alternates but what other colours did they have ???

Never assume by colour - most manufacturers stick to the the same colour scheme, but not always! Only ever buy based on the chemical type & never assume that the colour already in the engine is the right one...
Less useful when every suppliers says “what colour do you want?” And when you reply with the chemical make up you just get blank stares back…….🙈

Newer go above 50/50. That is the maximum you can secure the system. Pure antifreeze will actually freeze at around -20C
And antifreeze inhibits the cooling of the engine. To much antifreeze in the summer can make an overworked engine run hot.
That don`t meen you want to run pure water in the summer. Antifreeze lubricates your waterpump.
Newer engines even need the right antifreeze not to damage the engine gaskets.
Iveco uses Paraflu
Volvo got their own brand. (Green antifreeze) don`t know the name.
You can use other brands and it will run fine but the gaskets will slowly eat away.
Manufactures got lots of tricks to make you buy their stuff.
